All shaker doors share the same five-piece build, which simply means two vertical stiles, two horizontal rails and a flat center panel that sits recessed inside them. The proportions of those five pieces are what change the character.

Slim shaker narrows the rails and stiles to a tight border around the panel. The recess is still there and still catches a soft shadow, but the door reads current and uncluttered rather than traditional. Colors and Finishes to Consider

White shaker is the most popular finish we sell and the easiest to design around. It keeps a kitchen bright and works with essentially any countertop, which makes it the low-risk choice in a home you plan to sell. See white shaker for the full range.

Gray shaker covers warm greige through to cooler charcoal-leaning tones. Mid-tone grays hide everyday smudges better than very light or very dark finishes, which is a real advantage beside a busy range.

Blue shaker in navy and denim adds depth without darkening a room the way black does. It reads coastal beside white counters and more formal beside a warm stone.

Green shaker in sage and forest brings a natural, grounded feel. Sage is the softer, more livable end, forest the more dramatic.

Wood-tone shaker shows real grain through the finish and adds warmth and texture that painted doors cannot. It suits Scandinavian and contemporary kitchens especially well, and works beautifully as an island under white uppers.

Black shaker gives the highest contrast of the group and is growing quickly, most often on an island or a single wall rather than throughout.

Bringing the Room Together

Match hardware to frame width. This is the pairing that most often gets missed. A wide-frame shaker door has room for a knob or a cup pull and looks better with one. A slim shaker door suits a long, straight bar pull that follows the door edge and keeps the profile tight.

Countertops. A busy stone with strong veining pairs best with a slimmer frame, where there is less door detail competing for attention. A quieter quartz gives a wide-frame door space to be the feature.

Backsplash. Running tile to the underside of the wall cabinets emphasizes the horizontal line of a shaker run. Stopping it at a ledge makes the room feel more traditional.

Two-tone. White or gray shaker on the perimeter with a wood-tone or navy island is the layout we design most often, and it works because the door style stays constant while the color does the work.

Planning the layout. Guidance from organizations such as the National Kitchen and Bath Association is a useful starting point for working out clearances and work zones before you settle on cabinet sizes.

Good to Know

Frame width is a look, not a quality difference. A slim shaker door and a wide-frame shaker door from the same line are built the same way and carry the same hardware, so choose the proportion that suits your house rather than the one that sounds more premium.

Soft-close hardware is standard on doors and drawers. Lazy Susan, Easy Reach and Wall Pie Cut cabinets are supplied without the mechanism, which is helpful to plan for when you lay out a corner.

Painted shaker finishes are very consistent from door to door because they are sprayed and cured in factory conditions. Wood-tone finishes show natural grain variation from door to door, which is part of the character of a real wood-look kitchen.

Fillers, finished end panels, molding and toe kick are what make an installed run look built-in rather than assembled, and we include them in every quote so the total covers the complete job.

Fabuwood cabinets carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty on purchases made on or after 1 October 2024. Jarlin cabinets are covered by their own separate manufacturer warranty.
