RTA Cabinets (Ready to Assemble)

Ready-to-assemble cabinets arrive flat-packed in cartons and go together at the jobsite with the hardware already in the box. It is the same cabinet as the assembled version of the same model, with the same panels, the same doors and the same drawer boxes. What changes is where it gets put together, and that one difference is what makes RTA the most practical format for a lot of kitchens, particularly upstairs apartments, tight stairwells and projects where the budget is doing real work.

What Makes RTA Cabinets (Ready to Assemble) Worth Considering

Start with the money, because it is usually what brings people here. With RTA you are paying for the parts rather than the labor of putting them together. Across a full kitchen that is typically the single largest saving available to you without stepping down to a thinner box or cheaper hardware. The construction stays where you want it and the cost comes out of the assembly line instead.

Access is the other reason, and for a good number of projects it is the deciding one. A flat carton goes up a narrow stairwell, around a tight landing and into an apartment elevator that a built 36 inch pantry simply will not clear. If your kitchen is on the second or third floor of a city building, RTA may be the only format that physically reaches the room.

There are two quieter advantages worth knowing. Flat cartons have no assembled corners to rack out of square and no face frame to take a knock, so freight tends to arrive in better shape, and if a single panel does get damaged it can be replaced on its own rather than swapping a whole cabinet. And before install day, cartons stack flat against a wall, so an entire kitchen can wait in a spare bedroom or garage while demolition and flooring finish. Assembled boxes take up several times that floor space.

Assembled or Ready to Assemble

Both formats are worth having, and the right answer depends on your project rather than on quality.

Choose ready-to-assemble when budget is a priority, when access to the room is restricted, when you or your contractor are comfortable with a drill and a square, or when the cabinets need to be stored on site for a few weeks before they go in.

Assembled cabinets may be a better fit when the schedule is tight, when the crew is being paid by the day, or when nobody on the job wants to spend time building boxes before hanging them.

Availability differs by brand, which is the practical constraint. Jarlin is offered both assembled and ready-to-assemble across its finishes. You are not choosing between two separate ranges: each cabinet is a single listing, and where that size comes both ways you select Assembled or RTA (Unassembled) on the cabinet's own page. Eurocraft is priced as a flat box and as an assembled cabinet, and quotes shorter lead times on flat box orders. Fabuwood ships factory-assembled only, so a Fabuwood kitchen is not available flat-packed.

How These Cabinets Are Built

Within a given line, the panels, doors, drawer boxes and hardware in an RTA carton are the same parts used in the assembled cabinet. Construction varies between lines rather than between the two formats. Jarlin, the line most of our RTA customers order, is built on a 1/2 inch plywood box with a hardwood face frame, which simply means a solid wood frame runs across the front of the cabinet and the doors mount to that frame.

Here is what assembly actually involves, so you can judge it honestly before you order.

• The hardware is in the box. Cam locks, dowels, screws, hinges and drawer runners ship with each cabinet. A cam lock is a simple turn-to-tighten fastener that pulls two panels together, so most joints close with a quarter turn of a screwdriver.
• You supply very little. A cordless drill or screwdriver, a square and a clean flat working surface cover the whole job. No specialist tools are needed.
• Base and wall cabinets go quickly once you have done the first one and the sequence is in your head.
• Tall pantry and oven cabinets take longer, simply because of their size and the number of panels involved.
• Anything over about 36 inches tall is easier with two people, both to hold panels square while you fix them and to lift the finished box into position.

Cabinet performance standards published by industry bodies such as the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association are written around the finished cabinet, which is a useful reminder that a well-built flat-packed box and a well-built assembled box are judged by the same measures.

Finishes and How They Look

Every Jarlin door style ships ready-to-assemble, and the range covers both shaker and raised panel.

Shaker finishes include Cream White, Dove White, Sandy Mirage, Soda, Smoky Gray, Sterling Gray, Sage Green, Aria Blue, Toffee, Ebony and Unfinished. Dove White and Cream White are the easy, bright choices that let a countertop lead. Smoky Gray and Sterling Gray sit comfortably between warm and cool, which is why they land well in rooms that get mixed light. Sage Green and Aria Blue give a room character without going dark. Toffee and Ebony bring depth, and Unfinished exists for anyone planning to paint or stain on site.

Raised panel finishes include Avalon, Charlton, Newport and Perla. A raised panel door has a center panel that sits proud of the frame with a shaped profile around it, so the door catches light in more places and reads more traditional than a flat shaker panel.

Because a screen never shows sheen or texture accurately, order a door sample in the finish you are considering and look at it in your own kitchen before committing to a full order.

Pairings Worth Considering

Countertops. Dove White and Cream White shaker take almost any stone, so this is where a busy quartz or a marble-look slab can lead the design. Smoky Gray and Sterling Gray pair cleanly with white quartz for contrast, or with a warm cream stone if you want the room softer.

Hardware. Cup pulls and knobs suit the raised panel doors and the traditional look they carry. Straight bar pulls keep the shaker finishes reading current. Matte black is the safest high-contrast choice on a light door, and brushed brass warms up Toffee and Sage Green particularly well.

Two-tone layouts. A common and very effective RTA plan is Dove White perimeter cabinets with an Ebony or Toffee island. Since both ship flat, the freight stays compact even though you are running two finishes.

Backsplash and floor. A simple subway tile keeps the attention on a colored door such as Aria Blue. With Unfinished cabinets, decide your floor first, then match your on-site finish to it.

Good to Know

Plan a flat, clear working area near the room, ideally a garage or an empty adjacent space. Assembly goes noticeably faster when you can lay panels down and work at a comfortable height rather than on a finished floor.

Lead times depend on brand and finish rather than on the format alone. Eurocraft quotes shorter lead times on flat box orders than on assembled ones, and we confirm the timing for your specific finish when you order.

Soft-close hardware comes standard on doors and drawers, with the usual exception that Lazy Susan, Easy Reach and Wall Pie Cut cabinets are supplied without the mechanism.

Jarlin and Eurocraft each carry their own separate manufacturer warranties, which apply to the cabinet in either format.
