About black hardware

Choosing Matte Black Pulls and Knobs

Matte black is the finish that gives a kitchen definition. Against light doors, each pull draws a clean dark line, so the layout of drawers and doors reads clearly from across the room. The flat, low-sheen surface does not reflect light, which means smudges and water spots are hard to see. Black also ties in easily with a black faucet and dark light fixtures.

Most pieces here are matte black, with a few finishes for a different shade of dark. Black nickel and black stainless steel keep a soft metallic sheen, brushed black shows a fine grain, and anthracite is a deep charcoal gray. Sizes run from 3" vanity pulls to 18-7/8" pantry pulls, with matching black knobs for doors.

Are black cabinet pulls still in style?

Yes. Matte black has moved from a trend to a standard finish, much like brushed nickel did before it. Black is neutral, so it works with almost any cabinet color. Slim bar pulls and edge pulls read modern, while curved classic shapes in black suit farmhouse and traditional kitchens. For a softer look, black nickel or brushed black keeps the dark color with a little more depth.

Which cabinet colors go with black hardware?

White is the classic pairing. On Fabuwood Allure Galaxy Frost or Galaxy Dove, black pulls give the sharpest contrast. On light gray doors like Galaxy Nickel the effect is calmer, and on Galaxy Cobblestone it becomes a tone-on-tone look. Black also stands out on wood: Galaxy Natural Oak with matte black pulls mixes warm and modern. On green doors such as Galaxy Sage Green, black feels grounded and earthy. For navy cabinets, gold hardware usually shows up better.

What size black pulls should you buy?

Pick a pull about one third the width of the drawer. A 12" drawer takes a 3-3/4" pull, an 18" drawer about a 6-1/4" pull, and a 30" drawer a 10" pull. Doors look best with a 3-3/4" or 5" pull mounted vertically, or a knob. Sizes are measured center to center, so when you replace old hardware, measure the distance between the existing holes and order that size.

Matte black, black nickel or black stainless?

Matte black is flat and even, the most modern of the group. Black nickel is a dark, smoky metal with a soft shine that catches light on the edges. Black stainless steel is the easy pick if your refrigerator and range are black stainless. Anthracite is a charcoal gray, a little lighter than black, which looks softer against white doors.

Black Cabinet Pulls and Knobs FAQ

Do matte black pulls show fingerprints?

Less than polished finishes do. The flat surface hides most smudges, though oily marks can show in bright light. Wipe with a soft damp cloth and a drop of dish soap, then dry. Skip abrasive pads and strong cleaners, which can polish or wear the matte coating.

Should the knobs and pulls both be black?

Usually, yes. One finish on all the cabinet hardware makes the doors and drawers read as a set, with knobs on doors and pulls on drawers. To mix metals, put the second finish on the faucet or lighting.

Where should pulls go on doors and drawers?

Center pulls on drawers side to side, either in the middle of the front or a little closer to the top edge. On doors, mount the pull vertically on the stile opposite the hinge, about 2" to 3" from the corner, near the top on base cabinets and near the bottom on wall cabinets.

Are screws included, and how fast does black hardware ship?

Every pull and knob includes mounting screws for a standard 3/4" door or drawer front. Orders ship by parcel directly from Richelieu, usually within 1 to 2 business days, and hardware orders over $49 ship free to the contiguous United States.
