Frameless (Euro-Style) Kitchen Cabinets

Frameless cabinets, often called European or full-access cabinets, are built without a face frame across the front of the box. The doors mount directly to the cabinet sides, which gives you a clean contemporary front, a slightly wider opening and easier reach into everything you store. It is the construction behind most modern kitchens, and it is a genuinely practical upgrade as well as a good-looking one.

About Frameless / Euro Cabinets

A face frame is the wood frame you see across the front of a traditional cabinet box, the strip the doors mount to. Frameless cabinets are built without one, which simply means that frame is not there at all. The doors attach straight to the sides of the box instead, which is why frameless cabinets are also described as full-access.

Two things follow from that. The front of the kitchen looks streamlined, with door after door and very little else visible between them. And the inside of each cabinet opens up, because there is no frame edge narrowing the opening. Loading a stack of plates or sliding a tray out of a base cabinet is noticeably easier when nothing is standing in the way.

The look suits modern and contemporary kitchens naturally, and it is the right starting point when you want a clean, minimal front rather than a furnished, traditional one.

Door Styles Available

The frameless cabinets we carry come in two door styles, each offered in two lines.

• Catalina, available as Fabuwood Illume Catalina and Fabuwood Ovela Catalina, with the broadest finish selection of anything on this page.
• Tuscany, available as Fabuwood Illume Tuscany and Fabuwood Ovela Tuscany, sharing many of the same finishes in a different door.

Frameless construction pairs particularly well with slab and slim-shaker doors, since a flat or narrow-framed door alongside a frameless box gives you the most streamlined front available. If you like the clean box but want a little more definition in the door face, the slim shaker profile is the usual compromise customers land on.

What Every Cabinet Includes

Illume and Ovela look very similar from across the room and are built quite differently, so this is the section worth reading twice.

• Fabuwood Illume uses Blum MERIVOBOX metal drawer boxes with an engineered furniture board cabinet box. Metal drawer sides are far thinner than wooden ones, so a greater share of the drawer opening becomes usable storage. • Fabuwood Ovela is the frameless all-plywood line with dovetail drawer boxes. Dovetail means the drawer corners are joined with interlocking wedge-shaped cuts rather than butted together, so the box stays square as it fills with weight.
• Full access to the interior comes with the frameless build itself, along with a slightly wider opening than a framed cabinet of the same width.
• Soft-close operation is standard on doors and drawers across the lines we carry, so everything closes quietly on its own.

Choosing Your Finish

The frameless range is large, and grouping it by surface makes it much easier to work through.

Matte solids such as Blanco, Bianco Matte, Cashmere, Carbone Matte, Basalto, Antracita, Gris Nube and Gris Plomo give a soft, low-sheen front that suits a calm modern kitchen.

Gloss solids including Blanco Gloss, Bianco Gloss, Black Gloss, Cashmere Gloss, Agua Marina Gloss, Azul Indigo Gloss, Azul Marino Gloss and Grigio Gloss reflect light and make a smaller kitchen feel brighter and more open.

Wood-look surfaces including Como Ash 1 and 2, Nocce 1 and 3, Rosales 1, 2 and 3, Muratti 1 and 4, Woodline 1, 3 and 4, Ida 1 and 2, Olmo 3 and Frappe add grain and warmth to an otherwise minimal design.

Color and specialty finishes such as Olivo, Verde Salvia, Guayana, Ice Cream, Textil Plata, Metallo 1 and 4 and Euroline Gloss give the kitchen a character of its own.

Styling Your Kitchen

Hardware. Frameless fronts look best with restrained hardware. Slim bar pulls, edge pulls and integrated grips all keep the elevation quiet and let the run of doors read as one surface.

Countertops. A square-edge or waterfall counter matches the geometry of a frameless kitchen. Quiet stone lets the finish lead, while a strongly veined slab becomes the focal point in a room of plain doors.

Two-tone. Because the fronts are so uniform, mixing a wood-look on the island with a matte solid on the perimeter reads as a deliberate design decision rather than a mismatch.

Storage planning. Full access is worth designing around. Deep drawers in base cabinets take better advantage of a frameless box than doors and a fixed shelf do, so it is worth reviewing that in your layout.

Backsplash and walls. Large-format tile or a continuous slab suits the uninterrupted cabinet fronts, keeping visual lines to a minimum.

Good to Know

Framed cabinets have a face frame across the front of the box and frameless cabinets do not, which is what gives frameless its streamlined front and full interior access. Customers who prefer a more traditional look may be better suited by a framed line with a shaker door.

Soft-close hardware is standard on doors and drawers throughout the lines we carry. Lazy Susan, Easy Reach and Wall Pie Cut cabinets are supplied without the mechanism, which is worth knowing when you plan corner storage.

Consistent door spacing across a frameless run is what creates the clean, continuous front the style is known for, so allow time for careful adjustment at the end of the install.
