About Modern Kitchen Cabinets

The modern look suits open-plan homes especially well, because the kitchen is visible from the sofa and a plain cabinet face reads as architecture rather than as furniture. It suits new builds, city apartments and any renovation where the goal is to make a room feel larger and less cluttered than it is.

It also suits people who want their finish choice to be the design. A slab door has no frame detail to soften a color, so a matte navy is fully navy and a warm oak grain runs across the whole door face uninterrupted. If you have a countertop or a splashback you love, a modern door will let it lead.

Modern and contemporary are used interchangeably in cabinet catalogs, including ours. Both describe the same thing: streamlined doors, minimal ornamentation and current finishes, delivered in slim shaker, slab and frameless construction.

Door Styles Available

Slab is the purest modern door: a flat front with no frame and no panel. Fabuwood Illume Catalina brings slab doors in the widest range of contemporary finishes we carry, and Fabuwood Allure Luxe brings the same flat face on a framed, plywood-box line. Between them you can have the modern door with either construction underneath.

Slim shaker keeps a recessed panel but narrows the frame around it to a tight rail. Fabuwood Allure Luna is our narrow-rail profile, and it is the door for a home where a completely flat front would feel too severe. Contemporary framed doors such as Fabuwood Allure Nexus offer smooth, simple detailing on a framed line, which may be a better fit if the rest of the house is traditional and you want the kitchen to sit somewhere between the two.

Every one of these is full overlay, which means the door covers nearly the whole cabinet front and adjacent doors sit close together. On a modern kitchen that matters more than on any other style, because the unbroken face is the point.

What Every Cabinet Includes

• Soft-close hinges and drawer glides come standard. On a handleless design this is more than a convenience, since you are often closing a door with a push and want it to settle quietly rather than rebound. Concealed soft-close hinges stay completely hidden behind a closed slab door.
• Full-extension drawers pull clear of the box, so the back of a deep pan drawer is reachable without unloading the front.
• Furniture-grade plywood boxes with solid wood dovetail drawers on Allure Luxe and Allure Luna, a strong foundation that holds hardware tightly.
• An engineered furniture board box with Blum MERIVOBOX metal drawer boxes on Illume Catalina. The slim metal drawer sides suit the line's minimal interior and put more of the cabinet width into usable drawer space.
• Multi-step factory finishes applied in controlled conditions, which is what keeps color and sheen even across a long run of flat doors where any variation would be visible.
• Adjustable shelving and finished interiors so the inside of the cabinet looks as considered as the front.

Choosing Your Finish

Finish carries almost all of the character in a modern kitchen, so it is worth spending time here.

Matte finishes such as Bianco Matte, Carbone Matte, Antracita, Cashmere and Gris Plomo absorb light and give a slab door a soft, solid, architectural quality. Matte is the choice for a bright room where reflections would be busy, and for anyone who wants the kitchen to recede rather than sparkle.

Gloss finishes reflect light back into the room, which genuinely helps a compact or north-facing kitchen, and they wipe down easily. Gloss on base cabinets with matte above is a combination worth seeing.

Bold color is where modern doors are at their best. Graphite Black on Allure Luxe against pale walls is high contrast and confident. Denim Blue on Luxe gives depth without going fully dark. Azul Marino and Verde Salvia on Catalina bring color that still reads minimal.

Wood tone keeps a modern kitchen warm. Desert Oak on Allure Luxe and Nocce on Illume Catalina both put visible grain on a flat door, which is the easiest way to stop a minimal room feeling cold. Modern wood tone is one of the fastest-growing looks we sell.

Two-tone is close to a signature of the style: a dark or wood-tone base run under a light matte upper, or a contrasting island. Because modern doors are plain, two colors sit together cleanly instead of fighting.

Matte, gloss and wood-grain surfaces all behave very differently under real light. Order door samples and compare them on your own counter, in daylight and again in the evening, before you commit.

Styling Your Kitchen

Hardware, or none at all. Long slim bar pulls that follow the door edge reinforce the horizontal line. An integrated edge pull removes hardware from view entirely. If you want handles to be visible, keep them thin and let them be the only detail on the door.

Countertops. A stone with real movement pairs beautifully with a plain slab door, since nothing on the door competes with it. If you prefer a quiet counter, use a bold cabinet color or a gloss finish to carry the room instead.

Splashbacks. A full-height slab of the same material as the counter is the most modern option. Large-format tile with minimal grout lines is the more affordable route to the same uninterrupted effect.

Lighting. Under-cabinet lighting washing down a flat door face is one of the most effective things you can do in a modern kitchen, and it makes gloss finishes come alive after dark.

Keep the run clean. Plan storage so small appliances live behind a door. A minimal kitchen looks best when the counter is clear, and a tall pantry or an appliance garage makes that realistic rather than aspirational.

Warm it up. Wood floors, a wood-tone island, or open shelving in timber all stop a black-and-white modern kitchen from feeling austere.

Good to Know

Consistent door spacing and even reveals are what give slab cabinetry its streamlined appearance, and the six-way adjustable hinges are there precisely so an installer can dial that in across the run. Allow time at the end of the install for that adjustment pass.

Construction varies by modern line, which is useful when you are comparing. Allure Luxe and Luna are plywood boxes with solid wood dovetail drawers. Illume Catalina is an engineered furniture board box with Blum MERIVOBOX metal drawer boxes. If plywood throughout is your priority, all wood construction sets out which lines qualify.

Gloss shows fingerprints more readily than matte, and both clean easily with a soft cloth. Around a busy range, a mid-tone or wood-grain finish is the most forgiving of daily marks.

Soft-close hardware is standard on doors and drawers. Lazy Susan, Easy Reach and Wall Pie Cut cabinets are supplied without the mechanism, worth planning for in a corner.

Fabuwood cabinets carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty on purchases made on or after 1 October 2024.
