The box panels are plywood, which simply means thin wood veneers glued up in alternating layers, and that cross-grain structure is what gives the panel strength in both directions along with its resistance to swelling.

The practical payoff shows up in ordinary use. Screws and hinges bite into plywood and stay tight, so a door that is adjusted properly on install day is still hanging properly years later. The box under the sink handles the damp air that comes with a leaking trap or a hot dishwasher cycle without the panel edges puffing up. And a plywood box carries the weight of a stone countertop and a full run of dishes without deflecting.

There is a resale angle too. Buyers and inspectors look for plywood-box construction, and it is one of the few cabinet details a non-specialist can check by opening a door and looking at the exposed edge of the cabinet side.

How This Line Compares

Here is the clear answer to which lines qualify, so you can shop with confidence rather than guessing.

Fabuwood Allure qualifies. Furniture-grade plywood boxes, solid wood face frames and solid wood dovetail drawer boxes across every Allure door style, from Echo and Galaxy shaker through Luna slim shaker and Luxe slab.

Fabuwood Quest and Fabuwood Value Premium qualify. Both are framed lines built on plywood boxes with solid wood face frames, at a lower price point than Allure.

Fabuwood Ovela qualifies. It is the frameless line built on a plywood box with solid wood dovetail drawers, so you can have the frameless look without stepping away from plywood construction.

Jarlin qualifies. Jarlin boxes are 1/2 inch plywood with a hardwood face frame, plus soft-close hardware and dovetail drawer boxes, in both assembled and ready-to-assemble formats.

Two lines are built to a different recipe, and it is worth knowing which. Fabuwood Illume uses an engineered furniture board box with Blum MERIVOBOX metal drawer boxes, which offers a different construction style and is what gives the line its slim-sided drawer profile and European face. Eurocraft doors are engineered wood rather than solid wood. Customers whose priority is plywood and solid wood throughout will want to stay with the lines listed above. Customers drawn to the frameless European look may find frameless construction worth comparing on its own merits.

The Build, Feature by Feature

• Plywood cabinet boxes. The layered structure holds fasteners tightly, resists moisture better than compressed panels and is lighter for its strength, which matters when a wall cabinet is hanging off a stud.
• Solid wood face frames. On the framed lines, a hardwood frame runs across the front of the box. It stiffens the opening, gives the hinges something solid to anchor into and squares the cabinet up during install.
• Solid wood dovetail drawer boxes. Dovetail joints interlock like fingers, so the corner resists being pulled apart. That is the joint that keeps a heavy drawer square through years of yanking it open.
• Concealed six-way adjustable soft-close hinges. Six-way adjustment is how an installer dials in even gaps across a whole run after the cabinets are hung, and soft-close means the door eases shut quietly on its own.
• Undermount full-extension drawer glides. The runners sit beneath the drawer rather than at the sides, so you see wood instead of metal, and full extension brings the back of the drawer out where you can reach it.
• Finished plywood interiors. Sealed and smooth, so spills wipe off the shelf rather than soaking in.
• Adjustable plywood shelves. Same material as the box, so the shelf carries weight without bowing over a long span.

Put drawers where the weight goes. Plywood boxes and dovetail drawers are at their best in a pan bank beside the range. Three deep drawers there will outperform a door-and-shelf cabinet for both access and durability.

Counters. Quartz and natural stone are heavy, and a plywood box carries that load comfortably. A quiet white or gray quartz lets a colored door lead, while a stone with real movement pairs better with a plain door where nothing competes.

Hardware. Solid wood face frames take knobs and cup pulls happily, which is part of why the framed lines suit a more classic look. Bar pulls keep the same doors reading modern.

Around water. The sink cabinet and the run next to the dishwasher see the most moisture. This is exactly where plywood construction pays off, and a simple drip tray in the sink base is a sensible addition.

Open shelving and glass doors. Finished plywood interiors look good when they are on show, so a glass-front wall cabinet or an open end unit is a comfortable design move with these lines.

Good to Know

Not every cabinet on the market that is described as wood is plywood throughout, so the useful question to ask any supplier is what the box, the face frame and the drawer box are each made from. The lines listed on this page answer all three with plywood or solid wood.

MDF sometimes appears in the center panel of a painted door, and that is a deliberate choice rather than a compromise: a dense engineered panel expands and contracts less with humidity, so painted panels stay smooth. Our cabinet boxes remain plywood.

Soft-close hardware is standard on doors and drawers, with Lazy Susan, Easy Reach and Wall Pie Cut cabinets supplied without the mechanism.

Wood-tone finishes show natural variation in grain and color from door to door because the material underneath is real. Painted finishes read far more uniform. Both are normal and both are worth seeing in a sample.
