• Veneer-matched interiors with three-quarter inch edge banding, so the inside of a cabinet looks finished when the door is open.
• Five-eighths inch solid wood dovetail drawer boxes with a three-eighths inch plywood bottom. Dovetail means the corners interlock rather than relying on staples, which is what keeps a heavily loaded drawer square year after year.
• Full-extension Blum Tandem plus Blumotion concealed runners rated to a 75 pound dynamic load, which covers a drawer full of cast iron comfortably. Full extension means the drawer clears the cabinet completely, so the back of it is somewhere you can see into.

One measurement worth writing down before you order: interior drawer clearance is 4 inches. That is the number to check against your utensil trays and pan lids.

Available Finishes

Two doors carry the range. Catalina is a completely flat, full-overlay slab with matching slab drawer fronts, which on a frameless box produces a continuous plane across the whole run. Full overlay simply means the door covers almost all of the cabinet front, so you see door rather than frame. Tuscany is a five-piece door with a recessed center panel and matching five-piece drawer fronts, giving you shaker detail on a cabinet that still opens to its full width. Tuscany takes knobs and cup pulls in a way a slab door does not.

Gloss finishes reflect light and make a color read brighter and cleaner than the swatch suggests, which is why Bianco Gloss and Blanco Gloss are so often chosen for small or north-facing kitchens. Azul Marino, Black and Agua Marina take the same treatment in a much bolder direction, and Metallo and Textil Plata bring a subtle metallic character.

Matte finishes give a softer, flatter surface that hides marks better. Antracita, Basalto and Gris Plomo are the grays, close enough to one another that sampling two side by side is genuinely worth the small cost. Verde Salvia is the sage green, and Cashmere is the warm off-white that reads cream in daylight.

Textured woodgrains have a surface you can feel as well as see. Nocce, Olmo, Como Ash and Muratti run mid to dark. Woodline, Ida and Rosales run pale and sit in the light-oak territory that has dominated kitchen design for the last few years, alongside Clubhouse Oak, Ferrara Oak, Natural Elm and Hickory Rock. These are printed and embossed rather than stained natural timber, so the tone is identical from the first door to the last, which is hard to achieve in a large kitchen any other way.

Putting the Kitchen Together

Pale gloss finishes suit smaller kitchens because they bounce light around a room that does not have much to spare. A matte woodgrain on the base cabinets under a light wall run is the two-tone arrangement we are asked for most, and it works on both doors: Catalina for a calm modern room, Tuscany where you want the panel detail.

Because the reveals between doors are tight, alignment is more visible on a frameless kitchen than a framed one, and that works in your favor here. Every hinge is six-way adjustable and can be trimmed after hanging until the gaps are dead even, so it is worth telling your installer to take the extra twenty minutes at the end.

Wainscot panels in the matching finish are ordered separately and are what you use to carry the finish onto an exposed cabinet end or the back of an island, so the run looks intentional from every angle. Add them to the list at the same time as the cabinets.

Good to Know

Soft-close is fitted on doors and drawers as standard. Lazy Susan, Easy Reach and Wall Pie Cut cabinets are supplied without it, so keep that in mind when the corner gets planned.

Ovela ships with a protective film over the front face and edge banding of every door, front panel and finished accessory. Leave it on through the install and any remaining site work, then peel it off at the end. It is there to earn its keep during exactly the period when doors pick up scuffs.

Toe kick on tall pantries and base corner cabinets ships as a separate platform rather than integrated, which makes those two cabinets easier to set and level.

Woodgrain textures are not pattern matched between doors, so the grain does not run continuously from one door to the next. It reads as natural variation and is rarely noticed once the kitchen is in.

Most frameless cabinets are built on engineered board with metal drawer boxes, which is a perfectly sound way to build a cabinet and is exactly what Illume does. Ovela takes the same frameless format and puts plywood and dovetail underneath it instead. Choosing Between the Catalina and Tuscany Doors

Ovela comes in two door styles, and they sit at opposite ends of the same room.

Catalina

A completely flat, full-overlay slab. No frame, no recessed panel, nothing to interrupt the surface. On a frameless box the effect is a continuous plane of color or grain across the whole run, broken only by hairline gaps. This is the door for a kitchen that should feel calm and modern.

Tuscany

A five-piece door with a recessed center panel and matching five-piece drawer fronts. It gives you the shaker detail people find warm and familiar, on a cabinet that still opens to its full width.
