Black Kitchen Cabinets

Black kitchen cabinets are the most striking thing you can do with a kitchen, and the range here runs from deep charcoals through to true blacks in both matte and gloss. The finish you choose matters as much as the shade: matte absorbs light and feels velvety and modern, gloss returns it and keeps a dark kitchen feeling bright. Both are excellent, and they produce two very different rooms.

A black kitchen has presence. Cabinets in a deep charcoal or a true black give a room a clear focal point and a high-contrast, confident look that a neutral cannot match. Homeowners choose it for modern kitchens, for statement islands, and for two-tone layouts where black sits below and something lighter sits above.

Very little cabinetry is actually a flat, absolute black, and that is a good thing. Most of what gets called black is a very deep charcoal or a black with a slight brown or blue base. Those softened blacks keep all of the drama and are noticeably easier to live with day to day, which is why they make up most of what we ship.

The finish decision comes first, before the shade. A matte black absorbs light, reads modern and velvety, and handles fingerprints well. A gloss black reflects light, which keeps a dark kitchen feeling open and is a strong answer in a smaller room. In a family kitchen matte tends to be the easy pick; in a compact or lower-light room gloss earns its place by bouncing light back.

Where This Color Works Best

Dark cabinets absorb light rather than returning it, so a black kitchen rewards a bit of planning. The good news is that every solution is straightforward and none of them involve giving up the color.

• A black island in a light kitchen. This is the version we ship most often. You get the contrast and the focal point, and the brightness of the room is untouched. If black appeals to you and you want an easy way in, start here.
• Black below, light above. The workhorse layout, and a particularly good fit for a family kitchen. The darker color sits exactly where the handling and the splashes happen, and the upper half of the room stays open.
• A fully black kitchen. Genuinely superb in a large room with real natural light, a light floor and a light countertop. In those conditions it is the most striking kitchen we sell.
• Vanities and laundry areas. The same finishes carry into bathroom vanities and utility spaces, where a bold color is an easy commitment.

Two practical moves make any of these work better. Undercabinet lighting stops being optional and starts being a core part of the design, because it puts light exactly where you work and lifts the whole lower half of the room. And giving the light somewhere to bounce, whether that is a light countertop, a glossy backsplash or a window opposite the run, is what makes a black kitchen read as sharp and deliberate. The Build, Feature by Feature

The black finishes on this page span more than one Fabuwood family, and the construction differs between them, so it is worth knowing which you are looking at.

Graphite Black and Pitch Black sit on the Fabuwood Allure door styles, which are framed cabinets. These are framed cabinets, which simply means the box has a face frame across the front, the traditional American construction that most installers work with every day.

Antracita, Black, Black Gloss and Euroline Gloss appear on Fabuwood Illume and Fabuwood Ovela. Ovela is the frameless all-plywood line with dovetail drawer boxes. Frameless, sometimes called Euro construction, means there is no face frame across the front of the box, so the doors sit directly against the cabinet edges and you get a cleaner front and slightly easier access to the interior. Dovetail means the drawer corners are joined with interlocking wooden fingers, a joint that holds square under the weight of pans and crockery. Illume uses Blum MERIVOBOX metal drawer boxes rather than dovetail, and an engineered furniture board box rather than plywood, which gives the drawers a slim steel side and a very contemporary look inside.

Soft-close is standard across the lines we carry, with three exceptions: Lazy Susan, Easy Reach and Wall Pie Cut cabinets are supplied without the mechanism.

Picking a Finish

Graphite Black is the workhorse of the range and the widest spread, offered on Allure Echo, Fusion, Galaxy, Luna, Luxe and Nexus. If you want a deep black on a traditional framed cabinet with a choice of door profiles, this is the finish that gives you the most options.

Pitch Black is offered on Allure Galaxy, and is the one to sample if you want the darkest read available on a framed door.

Antracita is the softened charcoal in the group, available on Illume Catalina, Ovela Catalina, Illume Tuscany and Ovela Tuscany. It carries the drama without going all the way to a true black, which many homeowners find is the easier finish to live with over years.

Black Gloss and Euroline Gloss, on Illume Catalina and Ovela Catalina, are the reflective options. They are the right answer when the room needs light returned to it, and they give a black kitchen a sharper, more contemporary edge.

Designing With This Collection

Hardware works in reverse on a black kitchen. On a light kitchen, black handles supply the contrast. Here you need to go the other way so the hardware stays visible against the door.

Brass and gold are the strongest pairing with black, and they are the reason so many black kitchens look expensive. The warmth stops the room feeling severe and the contrast is unmistakable. Polished chrome or nickel gives you a cooler, sharper version of the same idea and suits a modern slab door particularly well. Black hardware on black doors can look excellent when it is done deliberately, using a different finish or texture on the handle than on the door, such as a matte pull on a gloss front. On a black slab kitchen, integrated and edge pulls are well worth considering, since an uninterrupted front is the whole point of that look.

For countertops, a light surface is almost always the answer. White or pale quartz against black cabinets is what makes the scheme read as crisp and intentional. Open shelving and wood accents are the other reliable additions, warming the room and breaking up a long run of dark fronts.

Good to Know

Dust shows more readily on black than on any other cabinet color, particularly on horizontal surfaces and on a matte finish. It wipes away easily and it is not a defect, but it is a real difference in daily upkeep and worth knowing before you choose.

Order a sample and look at it in the evening as well as in daylight. Black responds to artificial lighting more than any other finish we sell, and a charcoal that reads as near-black at noon can look distinctly gray under warm bulbs.

Painted finishes stay consistent from door to door, which matters here. Any variation across a run of dark doors would be visible immediately, and consistent factory finishing is what produces the even, deliberate look these kitchens depend on.
