About cabinet knobs

Choosing Kitchen Cabinet Knobs

Knobs are the simplest cabinet hardware: one screw, one hole and nothing to line up. That makes them quick to fit and easy to swap later. They sit neatly on doors, where the pulling motion is natural, and on small drawers that do not need a full grip. A row of round knobs on shaker doors gives a classic, tailored look.

The knobs here lean transitional and traditional, with a few modern and decorative designs. Nickel finishes have the widest choice, from brushed and polished nickel to antique nickel and pewter. Bronze knobs come in brushed oil-rubbed bronze, antique English and honey bronze. You will also find matte black, chrome, champagne bronze, burnished brass and natural iron, and clear knobs with nickel, chrome or bronze accents.

What size cabinet knobs should I buy?

Most knobs here are 28 to 34 mm across, about 1-1/8" to 1-3/8", which suits standard doors and drawers from about 12" to 24" wide. A few smaller knobs, 20 to 25 mm, fit spice pullouts and small vanity drawers. For drawers wider than about 24", use two knobs or switch to cabinet pulls, which give a better grip on a heavy drawer.

Where do knobs go on cabinet doors?

Place the knob on the stile opposite the hinge, about 2" to 3" from the corner. On base cabinets it goes near the top corner, and on wall cabinets near the bottom corner, so it is always within easy reach. On small drawers, center the knob on the front. On wider drawers, use two knobs, each about one third of the way in from the ends. A paper template keeps every hole consistent.

Knobs on doors, pulls on drawers?

This is the most common layout, and it works with any style. Keep the knobs and pulls in the same finish so they read as one set, and pick shapes from the same family: round knobs with rounded pulls, square with square. Another option is knobs on wall cabinets and pulls on base cabinets. Shop matching matte black or brushed nickel sets, or browse all cabinet knobs and pulls.

Which knob finish suits your cabinets?

Start with the cabinet color. On white doors like Fabuwood Allure Galaxy Frost, matte black or polished nickel both look sharp. Cream Galaxy Linen takes oil-rubbed bronze or champagne bronze well. On green Galaxy Sage Green or navy Galaxy Indigo, brass and champagne bronze stand out. Gray cabinets like Galaxy Nickel suit nickel and chrome. Cabinet Knobs FAQ

What is the standard size for cabinet knobs?

Most cabinet knobs are 1-1/4" to 1-3/8" across, about 32 to 35 mm. Ours are mostly 28 to 34 mm, with a few 20 to 25 mm knobs for small drawers. Larger doors and drawers can take the bigger end of that range.

Should I use knobs or pulls on kitchen cabinets?

Use knobs where a light grip is enough, such as doors and small drawers. Use pulls on deep drawers, pantry doors and trash pullouts, where you want a full hand. Many kitchens use both: knobs on doors and pulls on drawers.

How do I replace cabinet knobs?

Unscrew the old knob from inside the door and fit the new one in the same hole with its included screw. Knobs need only one hole, so you can change styles without drilling. Switching from knobs to pulls takes a second hole, and the pull should cover or reuse the first one.

Do knobs come with screws, and how do they ship?

Yes. Each knob includes mounting screws for a standard 3/4" door or drawer front. Knobs ship by parcel directly from Richelieu, usually within 1 to 2 business days, with free shipping on hardware orders over $49 to the contiguous United States.
