Transitional Pulls and Knobs for Shaker Kitchens
A transitional kitchen borrows from both sides. The cabinets often have a classic shaker frame, while the counters, lighting and appliances are current. Transitional hardware follows the same idea. A pull might be a straight bar with gently shaped ends, or a slight arch instead of a full bow. The result looks neither dated nor stark, and it tends to age well as trends change.
This collection has pulls from 3" to 12-5/8" and a group of knobs, so you can outfit doors and drawers in the same finish. Nickel finishes lead, from brushed and polished nickel to antique nickel and pewter. Warmer choices include brushed oil-rubbed bronze, antique English, honey bronze and champagne bronze, with matte black and chrome for more contrast.
What is transitional cabinet hardware?
It is hardware with a simple overall form and one soft traditional touch, such as a bar pull with rounded, slightly raised ends or a pull with a gentle arch. Modern hardware strips all detail away and traditional hardware leans into it. Transitional pieces sit in the middle, which makes them the easiest style to match to your cabinets, faucet and lighting.
Does transitional hardware go with shaker cabinets?
Yes. Shaker doors are the classic base for a transitional kitchen, and transitional pulls suit them about as well as any style can. On a white or off-white shaker like Fabuwood Allure Galaxy Frost or Galaxy Dove, a polished nickel or champagne bronze pull keeps the room bright. On darker doors like Galaxy Cobblestone or Galaxy Indigo, antique nickel or matte black adds depth without fighting the color.
Knobs on doors, pulls on drawers
This is the classic transitional layout. Knobs on the wall and base doors keep the look light, and pulls on the drawers give a better grip where the weight is. Set knobs on the stile opposite the hinge, about 2" to 3" from the corner, and center pulls on drawers. Keep both in the same finish so the room reads as one set. Shop cabinet knobs and cabinet pulls.
Which finish feels most transitional?
Nickel finishes lead this collection because they match stainless appliances and work with almost any cabinet color. Bronze finishes like brushed oil-rubbed bronze and antique English warm up cream and wood cabinets such as Galaxy Linen and Galaxy Natural Oak. Brushed finishes are easier to live with than polished ones, since they hide fingerprints better. Compare brushed nickel and bronze.
Transitional Cabinet Hardware FAQ
What is the difference between transitional and modern hardware?
Modern hardware is all straight lines and flat surfaces. Transitional hardware keeps that clean shape but adds a soft curve or small detail. If modern feels too stark and traditional feels too formal, transitional is the middle ground. Compare modern and traditional.
What size transitional pulls should I buy?
Usually 3-3/4" or 5" for standard drawers and doors. For drawers 24" and wider, use the 1/3 rule and step up to 7-1/2" or 10". Tall pantry doors look best with a 12-5/8" pull mounted vertically.
Can I mix transitional hardware with other styles?
Yes. Transitional pieces blend easily, which is their main strength. Keep one style on the cabinets in a room, then use a different look on an island or a bathroom vanity if you want contrast. Matching the finish matters more than matching the exact design.
What comes with each pull and knob?
Mounting screws for a standard 3/4" door or drawer front. Hardware ships by parcel directly from Richelieu, usually within 1 to 2 business days, and hardware orders over $49 ship free to the contiguous United States.
