The visual effect in a finished room is calm. Long horizontal runs read as continuous planes rather than a series of framed squares, and the eye moves across the kitchen without stopping. That is the reason slab has become the default in contemporary and European design, and why it works so well in open-plan spaces where the kitchen is part of the living area.

Slab is also the profile that carries a bold finish best. High-gloss color, a matte deep neutral or a strong wood-look grain all have room to be seen when the door is not divided up by a frame.

Door Styles Available

The flat panel look comes from three different sources on our site, and each one has a distinct character.

Slab doors are frequently combined with frameless cabinet construction, which simply means the cabinet box has no wood frame across the front and the doors mount straight to the box sides. Pairing the two gives you the most minimal front available, with very little gap and no visible frame anywhere.

Cabinet Construction and Features

Because slab spans several lines, it helps to know what sits behind the door you are choosing.

• Fabuwood Illume uses Blum MERIVOBOX metal drawer boxes with an engineered furniture board cabinet box. Metal drawer sides are much thinner than wood ones, so more of the drawer opening is usable storage.
• Fabuwood Ovela offers the same Catalina looks as the frameless all-plywood line with dovetail drawer boxes. Dovetail joints are interlocking wedge-shaped cuts at the drawer corners that hold the box square as it takes weight.
• Eurocraft doors are engineered wood or MDF rather than solid wood. That construction gives a very flat, stable surface, which is what a high-gloss or matte slab finish needs to look even across a full door. Eurocraft wall cabinets are 12 inches deep, the same as the common wall cabinet depth.
• Soft-close operation is standard on doors and drawers across the lines we carry, which keeps a handle-light kitchen quiet in daily use.

Slab finishes fall into four groups, and choosing the group before the color makes the decision far easier.

Matte solids such as Bianco Matte, Blanco, Cashmere, Carbone Matte, Basalto, Antracita, Gris Nube, Gris Plomo, Matte White, Matte Gray, Matte Black and Matte Nautical absorb light and give a soft, modern surface with a low sheen.

Gloss solids including Bianco Gloss, Blanco Gloss, Black Gloss, Cashmere Gloss, Agua Marina Gloss, Azul Indigo Gloss, Azul Marino Gloss, Gloss White and Gloss Gray reflect light back into the room, which makes a compact kitchen feel larger and brighter.

Wood-look surfaces such as Como Ash 1 and 2, Nocce 1 and 3, Rosales 1, 2 and 3, Muratti 1 and 4, Woodline 1, 3 and 4, Olmo 3, Frappe, Ida 1 and 2, Medium Oak, White Oak, Red Oak, Dark Oak and Pecan bring grain and texture to a flat door.

Color and specialty finishes including Olivo, Verde Salvia, Guayana, Ice Cream, Textil Plata, Metallo 1 and 4 and Euroline Gloss give a slab kitchen a distinct identity.

Availability varies by brand and cabinet line, so check the product page for the finish you want. Comparing a matte and a gloss version of the same color side by side is genuinely useful, because the two can look like different colors entirely once the light hits them.

Design Ideas That Work

Handle-light fronts. Slab suits minimal hardware, whether that is a slim edge pull, an integrated grip or a long bar that runs most of the door width. Choosing hardware early is worth doing, since it changes the proportion of the whole elevation.

Countertops. A waterfall edge or a thick square-edge counter sits naturally with a flat door, because both share the same simple geometry. Quiet quartz keeps the finish as the feature, while a strongly veined stone gives a plain slab kitchen its focal point.

Two-tone. Combining a wood-look slab on the island with a matte solid on the perimeter is one of the most effective looks available in this door style, and it costs nothing extra to do.

Lighting. Gloss finishes are reflective, so under-cabinet lighting reads clearly on them. Matte finishes benefit from a slightly warmer light to keep them from looking flat after dark.

Backsplash. A large-format tile or a slab backsplash keeps grout lines to a minimum, which suits the uninterrupted look of the doors.

Proper alignment and consistent door spacing help create the clean, streamlined appearance expected from slab cabinetry, so it is worth having the doors adjusted carefully once everything is hung.

Soft-close hardware is standard on doors and drawers throughout the lines we carry. Lazy Susan, Easy Reach and Wall Pie Cut cabinets are supplied without the mechanism, which is useful to know when you plan a corner.
