Frameless Euro Style Cabinets

Open a frameless cabinet and the difference is obvious before anyone explains it. There is no wooden frame around the opening and no vertical strip down the middle of a double cabinet, so you are looking straight into the full width of the box. That one construction change is what gives European kitchens their flush, uninterrupted face and their easy, grab-it-with-one-hand storage, and it is the reason frameless has become a default in modern new builds.

Getting to Know Frameless Euro Style Cabinets

A traditional American cabinet has a solid wood frame across the front of the box, and the doors mount to that frame. A frameless cabinet skips it entirely: the doors attach directly to the sides of the box. That is the whole idea, and everything else follows from it.

What you gain first is access. The opening is the full internal width of the cabinet, so a stack of dinner plates or a stock pot goes in and out without being angled past a frame edge. On a double-door base cabinet there is no center stile, which simply means the narrow vertical strip that normally sits between two doors is not there, so you can open both doors and reach across the whole cabinet in one movement.

What you gain second is the look. Without a frame, doors sit very close together across a run and the face of the kitchen reads as a continuous plane. Horizontal lines carry uninterrupted from one end of a wall to the other, which is why frameless suits long runs, galley kitchens and open-plan rooms where the kitchen is part of the living space.

Drawers benefit most of all. A frameless drawer can be built to nearly the full width of the box, so a cutlery drawer or a pan drawer in the same nominal cabinet size simply holds more.

Door Styles Available

Frameless construction pairs naturally with plain, clean-lined doors, and we carry two shapes.

Slab doors are flat with no frame or panel detail at all. This is the classic European front and the reason the style photographs the way it does: nothing on the door interrupts the surface, so the finish, the grain and the countertop are what you notice. Fabuwood Illume Catalina and Fabuwood Ovela Catalina both use full-overlay slab doors, where full overlay means the door covers almost the entire cabinet front so very little box is visible between doors.

Five-piece doors keep frameless construction but put a recessed panel inside a frame on the door itself. Fabuwood Ovela Tuscany and Fabuwood Illume Tuscany take this route. It is the option to pick if you want the full-access box and clean sightlines of frameless but would rather the doors had some definition than be completely flat.

If you are drawn to the modern face but want a framed cabinet underneath, a slim shaker door on a framed line offers a different construction style with a similarly current profile.

Cabinet Construction and Features

We carry three frameless lines, and they are built differently from one another, which is genuinely useful when you are choosing.

Fabuwood Illume is built on an engineered furniture board box with Blum MERIVOBOX metal drawer boxes rather than dovetail. The metal drawer sides are slim, which is exactly what you want in a frameless cabinet because it puts more of the box width into usable drawer space. Illume is available as Catalina slab and Tuscany five-piece.

Fabuwood Ovela is the frameless line built on a plywood box with solid wood dovetail drawer boxes. Choose Ovela if plywood construction and dovetail joinery are on your list and you also want the frameless face. It comes in Catalina slab and Tuscany five-piece doors.

Eurocraft uses engineered wood or MDF doors on a three-quarter inch plywood box, and is priced both as a flat box and as an assembled cabinet, with shorter lead times quoted on flat box orders. Its standard wall cabinets are 12 inches deep and its base cabinets carry an adjustable shelf at 18 inches deep with full edge banding.

Across the frameless lines, the shared features are the ones you use every day.

• Soft-close doors and drawers as standard, so a flush frameless face is never disturbed by a door bouncing back.
• Full-extension drawer runners that bring the whole drawer clear of the cabinet. On a wide frameless drawer that is the difference between reaching the back and unpacking the front. Runner systems such as those made by Blum are what make a heavy, wide drawer glide smoothly.
• Concealed adjustable hinges mounted directly to the cabinet side, adjustable in several directions so an installer can bring every gap across a run into line.
• Adjustable shelving the full internal width of the box.

The Finish Range

Frameless is where our most contemporary finishes live, and they fall into three families.

Matte solids such as Bianco Matte, Carbone Matte, Antracita, Cashmere, Gris Plomo, Azul Marino and Verde Salvia absorb light rather than reflecting it. Matte suits a room with strong natural light, where gloss can be busy, and it gives a slab door a soft, architectural quality. Bianco Matte with a pale quartz and integrated pulls is about as calm as a kitchen gets. Azul Marino and Verde Salvia bring color without breaking the minimal feel.

Gloss finishes including Blanco Gloss, Bianco Gloss, Grigio Gloss, Black Gloss, Cashmere Gloss and Euroline Gloss reflect light back into the room. In a compact or north-facing kitchen that is genuinely useful, and gloss wipes down easily. Black Gloss on a base run under matte white uppers is a striking, very European combination.

Textured wood looks such as Olmo 3, Nocce 1, Nocce 3, Muratti, Woodline, Como Ash and Rosales bring visible grain to a flat door. This is the warmest direction frameless goes, and it is a good answer if you like the clean lines but do not want the room to feel cold.

Gloss, matte and textured surfaces all behave very differently under real lighting, so order a door sample and look at your shortlist in both daylight and evening light before deciding.

Design Ideas That Work

Let the run be long. Frameless rewards uninterrupted horizontal stretches. Where the layout allows, plan a continuous bank of base cabinets rather than breaking it up, and the flush face does the work for you.

Go handleless, or go slim. An integrated edge pull or a long, thin bar pull keeps the face uncluttered. Chunky knobs work against the style rather than with it.

Drawers over doors below the counter. Since frameless drawers are wide, a base run built mostly from drawers is more useful than the same run built from doors and shelves.

Two-tone by plane. Matte or textured wood on the base cabinets with a lighter matte above is a reliable frameless layout, and it keeps the upper half of the room feeling open.

Pick the counter to suit the door. A plain slab door leaves room for a stone with real movement to be the feature. If you prefer a quiet counter, let a gloss or a strong color carry the room instead.

Lighting. Under-cabinet lighting grazes across a flush frameless face beautifully, and on gloss finishes it adds real depth after dark.

Good to Know

Even, consistent gaps between doors are what give frameless cabinetry its clean appearance, and the adjustable hinges are designed exactly for that. Allow your installer time to walk the run and fine-tune each door once everything is hung.

Frameless and framed are two construction approaches rather than a better and worse one. Frameless offers full-access openings and a contemporary face. Framed cabinets may be a better fit for a traditional room where a visible face frame is part of the look you want.

Construction varies by frameless line, so match the line to your priorities: Ovela for plywood and dovetail, Illume for the engineered furniture board box with Blum MERIVOBOX metal drawers, Eurocraft for engineered wood or MDF doors on a three-quarter inch plywood box with a flat-pack option.

Soft-close hardware is standard on doors and drawers, with Lazy Susan, Easy Reach and Wall Pie Cut cabinets supplied without the mechanism.

Gloss surfaces show fingerprints more readily than matte, and both wipe clean with a soft cloth. Choosing between them is worth doing with a sample in hand rather than from a photograph.
