With no stile narrowing the opening, the usable width of an Illume cabinet is close to its nominal width, so a 30 inch frameless base takes a wider drawer than a framed cabinet of the same size. Neither is simply better than the other. They are answers to different questions.

If frameless is what you want and an all-plywood box is a firm requirement for your project, Fabuwood Ovela is the line to look at, since it is frameless on plywood and keeps solid wood dovetail drawers. How These Cabinets Are Built

The specification below comes from the Illume guide rather than from marketing copy.

• Threespine Click Technology joins the panels with a mechanical lock, giving tight seams and a rigid frameless carcass without relying on fasteners alone.
• Sides, top and bottom are 3/4 inch Engineered Furniture Board, edge-banded at the front in White Linen textured laminate with a matching White Linen interior. The back panel is 1/4 inch with 5/8 inch hanging rails.
• Adjustable shelving is the same 3/4 inch board, edge-banded to match and sitting on metal shelf clips, so you can reset the interior around whatever you actually store.
• BLUM MERIVOBOX metal drawer boxes with an indium gray interior, concealed full-extension slides and integrated BLUMOTION soft-close. Rated to a 75 lb dynamic load, with an interior drawer height of 2 5/8 inches.
• BLUM concealed clip-on hinges with BLUMOTION soft-close and quick-release, six-way adjustable and opening to 110 degrees.
• Adjustable furniture feet on base and tall cabinets, ranging from 3 3/4 to 5 3/8 inches, with clip-on brackets for the toe kick.

The MERIVOBOX system is a deliberate part of what makes the frameless format work. A metal drawer side wall is slimmer than a wooden one, so more of the cabinet's width ends up as usable drawer space, and the slide is integrated into the box rather than added underneath it, which is where the published 75 lb load rating comes from. Six-way adjustment on the hinges matters here too, because on a frameless cabinet every door is visible along its full edge and that adjustment is how an installer gets a long run to line up. Quick-release means a door comes off without a screwdriver when you want to paint behind it.

Finishes and How They Look

Catalina is the full-overlay slab: a flat 3/4 inch MDF front with no frame and no panel. It carries the widest color palette Fabuwood offers, covering high-gloss finishes, matte finishes, solid colors and printed wood-look textures. If you want a handleless or minimal-hardware kitchen, this is the door that suits it, because there is nothing on the face competing with the pull.

Tuscany takes the same frameless box and puts a five-piece door on it, so you keep the full-access interior and the European hardware while the face of the kitchen reads more traditional. It is the natural pick for a transitional room where a slab would feel too plain against existing millwork.

The palette divides usefully into three groups. The solids in matte, such as Blanco, Bianco Matte, Black, Carbone Matte, Antracita, Basalto, Cashmere, Gris Nube and Gris Plomo, give you a calm, even surface and the easiest match to a specific countertop. The gloss finishes, including Blanco Gloss, Black Gloss, Grigio Gloss, Cashmere Gloss and Azul Indigo Gloss, reflect the light in the room and make a compact kitchen feel more open. The textured wood-looks, Nocce, Olmo, Woodline, Como Ash, Muratti, Rosales, Ida and Metallo among them, bring grain and warmth to a frameless kitchen without the tone variation of a stain.

Color runs across both doors in many cases, so a finish like Cashmere, Basalto, Verde Salvia or Woodline can be had as either a slab or a five-piece door. Catalina carries the full range, including the gloss finishes and several textures not offered on Tuscany.

Pairings Worth Considering

A frameless kitchen reads as continuous surface, so the surfaces around it carry the design.

With a gloss finish, keep the countertop relatively quiet. Gloss doors already bounce light and reflect the room, and a heavily veined stone alongside them competes for attention. A honed quartz in a soft neutral lets the doors do the reflecting.

With a matte solid, the opposite works. A dramatic marble-look surface sits beautifully against Antracita, Basalto or Blanco, because the flat door face gives the stone a clean backdrop.

With a textured wood-look, pair a warmer counter and warmer metal. Brushed brass and bronze bring out the grain print, and a pale stone keeps the room from going too heavy. A wood-look Catalina island under a Blanco perimeter is a layout we design often.

Hardware deserves thought on a slab door. Long bar pulls run with the horizontal lines and suit Catalina particularly well, and edge pulls or integrated channels keep the face clear if you want the handleless look. On Tuscany, a knob and cup pull combination brings out the recessed panel. Matching wainscot panels are available separately if you want exposed cabinet sides finished to match the door rather than the White Linen laminate.

Good to Know

Soft-close is standard across Illume on doors and drawers, with one exception to plan around before you design a corner. Lazy Susan, Easy Reach and Wall Pie Cut cabinets do not include the soft-close mechanism.

Illume is the Fabuwood line built on 3/4 inch Engineered Furniture Board rather than plywood. Fabuwood Allure, Ovela, Quest and Value Premium are the plywood-box lines, so if all-plywood construction is a firm requirement for your project, Allure or Ovela may be the better fit.

The wood-look finishes are printed textures on the door face rather than real veneer, and Fabuwood notes that the grain is not pattern matched across a run. In practice that means every door in the kitchen looks consistent with every other, which many buyers prefer to the natural variation of veneer.

Interior dimensions follow the frameless format. Standard-depth base cabinets carry an 18 inch deep adjustable shelf, wall cabinets are 13 inches deep with 12 inches of interior depth and take 12 inch shelves, and tall cabinets take 21 inch shelves. Rubber bumpers are fitted to doors and drawer fronts as standard.

Price columns follow the finish rather than the door. The gloss and matte solids sit in one column and the textured wood-looks in another, so two Catalina doors in different finishes are not necessarily the same price.
