Inside the Cabinet

The box. Sides, top and bottom are 3/4 inch engineered furniture board, assembled with Threespine click technology, which draws the panels together mechanically for tight seams and a rigid structure. Shelves are the same material, edge-banded in White Linen textured laminate, and the back panel is 1/4 inch MDF. Interiors are finished in White Linen, a light neutral that keeps the inside of a deep cabinet easy to see into. Base and tall cabinets ship with adjustable furniture feet so a run can be leveled precisely on a floor that is not.

The door. Catalina doors and drawer fronts are 3/4 inch MDF with a lacquered surface and matching edge banding on all four sides, finished using Fabuwood's Pro Touch Technique. MDF is the right core for a slab specifically because it has no grain direction to move along, which is what keeps a large flat front looking flat over the years.

The hardware. Drawers use the Blum MERIVOBOX metal drawer system in indium gray, with concealed full-extension slides, integrated soft-close and a 75 pound dynamic load rating. Full extension means the drawer travels completely clear of the cabinet, so the back corner is as usable as the front. Hinges are Blum clip-on with BLUMOTION, six-way adjustable and opening to 110 degrees, with quick-release so a door comes off in seconds for cleaning or painting behind it.

Colors and Finishes to Consider

The palette splits into three surface types that behave very differently once they are on a wall.

Gloss. Gloss reflects light, which visually opens a small or dark kitchen and makes a color read brighter than its swatch. Bianco, Blanco and Cashmere are the easy, livable choices. Azul Marino, Olivo and Black are for when the cabinets are meant to be the feature. Gloss shows fingerprints more readily than matte, so it pairs well with a handle rather than a push-to-open front.

Matte. Matte absorbs light and gives a softer, more grounded room, and it handles fingerprints better day to day. Antracita, Basalto and Gris Plomo are the grays worth sampling together, since they separate clearly in person and barely at all on a screen. Verde Salvia is the sage that has been quietly taking over kitchens for the last few years, and it pairs beautifully with brass and pale oak flooring.

Textured woodgrain. These have a surface you can feel as well as see. Nocce, Olmo, Muratti and Como Ash cover the mid to dark browns. Woodline, Ida, Rosales and Frappe run paler, in the light-oak territory a lot of kitchens are heading toward. They are printed and embossed rather than stained real wood, so the tone stays perfectly consistent from the first door to the last, which is an advantage in a large kitchen and hard to achieve any other way.

Bringing the Room Together

A flat door puts more emphasis on the two surfaces beside it. Countertop movement counts for more here than in a paneled kitchen, so a quartz with soft veining or a stone with genuine depth gives a minimal room its warmth. A textured backsplash does the same job at a lower cost.

Hardware is the other lever. Long bar pulls run with the horizontal line of the cabinets and reinforce the clean look. Edge pulls and integrated grips almost disappear if you want the front completely uninterrupted. Round knobs work against a slab front, so we would point you toward a pull instead.

Two-tone layouts suit Catalina particularly well. Good to Know

Doors and drawers close softly as a matter of course. Lazy Susan, Easy Reach and Wall Pie Cut cabinets are the exception and come without the soft-close mechanism, so plan that corner knowing it.

Woodgrain textures are not pattern matched between doors, so the grain does not run continuously from one door into the next. On a flat front this reads as natural variation and most people never notice it, though it is worth picturing before you order a long run.
