Getting to Know Slim Shaker Cabinets

Stand in front of a slim shaker run and what you notice is how much of each door is panel. On a traditional shaker the frame measures somewhere between two and a half and three and a quarter inches depending on the door. Narrowing that band puts the finish and the light where you actually see them, and it is why the same color looks stronger here than it does on a standard shaker.

You will see this door sold under several names. Thin shaker, skinny shaker, narrow rail shaker and rail shaker all describe the same thing: a shaker door built with a slimmer frame around the recessed center panel. The rail is simply the frame member, so narrow rail and slim shaker are two ways of saying the same sentence.

Door Styles Available

Luna is a single door profile offered across a wide finish range, so the decision here is about color and about how narrow you want the frame to go.

• Slim shaker at three-quarter inch. The Luna door. Narrow enough to read modern, wide enough that the recessed panel still has a clear frame around it. This is the profile most people mean when they search for slim shaker.
• Traditional shaker at two and a half to three and a quarter inches. The classic proportion, more substantial on the eye and a natural fit for farmhouse and transitional rooms.
• The narrowest option. Fabuwood Allure Echo runs a five-sixteenths inch frame, which is narrower again. Our thin shaker range sets Luna beside Echo if you want to compare the two profiles before choosing.

Cabinet Construction and Features

Getting a frame down to three-quarter inch changes how the door has to be built, and Luna is put together specifically for it. A traditional shaker is joined with mortise and tenon, a joint that needs material either side of it. At this width the door is built instead with applied profile molding around a five-eighths inch moisture-resistant MDF and veneer center panel.

The frame material follows the finish. Stained Luna doors use solid wood stiles and rails, so the grain carries through the frame as well as the panel rather than stopping at the panel edge. Painted Luna doors use HDF, which moves far less as humidity shifts through the year. On a narrow painted frame that stability is exactly what keeps a joint looking clean season after season.

Everything behind the door is standard Fabuwood Allure construction:

• A plywood box with a finished interior and a solid wood face frame. Plywood holds a screw properly, so hinges and glides stay tight over years of daily use.
• Solid wood dovetail drawer boxes. Dovetail means the corners interlock rather than being stapled together, which keeps a loaded drawer square.
• Full-extension Blum Tandem plus Blumotion concealed runners. These are full-extension runners, which simply means the drawer travels clear of the cabinet, so the back of a deep drawer is somewhere you can see into rather than fish around in.
• Blum Compact Clip soft-close hinges, so doors pull themselves shut quietly over the last inch instead of banging.

The Finish Range

Eighteen finishes carry the Luna door, and they behave differently once a narrow frame gives the panel more of the surface.

Neutrals and whites are Cloud White, Dove and Macadamia Beige. These are the steadiest choice for a full kitchen and the most generous in rooms with limited natural light, since a pale door bounces what light there is around the room.

Greens run from Sage and Mint through Pistachio to Hunter and Forest. Sage is the most ordered green we ship in any door style, soft enough to work as a whole kitchen. Hunter and Forest have the depth to carry an island on their own against a lighter perimeter.

Blues are Denim Blue, Izel Blue and Indigo. Indigo is the true navy of the group, and Luna is one of only two door styles that carries it, which is worth knowing if navy is what brought you here.

Statement colors are Graphite Black, Cabernet Red and Orchid Purple. A narrow frame suits these particularly well, because there is less painted surface in the room than the same color would occupy on a wide-frame door.

Wood tones are Desert Oak, Timber, Truffle and Kona. These are the finishes where Luna's solid wood stiles earn their keep, since the grain runs through the frame rather than stopping at the panel. Desert Oak is the pale rift-cut oak look and sits in a higher price column than the rest.

Design Ideas That Work

Hardware scale is the first thing to rethink. A wide cup pull sized for a traditional shaker sits heavily on a three-quarter inch rail. Slim bar pulls, edge pulls and knobs with a small footprint look far better against this door, and plenty of Luna kitchens go handleless on the base run entirely and put pulls only on the wall cabinets.

Countertop choice gets easier rather than harder. The clean door front leaves room for a surface with real movement, so a veined quartz or a marble-look stone can be the feature without the room becoming busy. Cloud White or Dove cabinets under a softly veined counter is the combination we design most often.

Two-tone layouts suit this profile. Denim Blue or Forest Green on the base run with Cloud White above keeps a kitchen open at eye level while the color grounds it, and because every finish sits on the same door the proportions stay consistent from top to bottom. A Graphite Black island in an otherwise pale kitchen is the lowest-commitment way to use one of the statement colors.

Good to Know

Soft-close hinges and glides are standard throughout. Lazy Susan, Easy Reach and Wall Pie Cut cabinets are supplied without the mechanism, so factor that in when the corner gets planned.

Consistent reveals are what give a narrow rail its crisp appearance, so order proper filler strips rather than scribing cabinets to a wall, and allow your installer the time to set the gaps evenly along each run. The result is the clean shadow line this door is chosen for.

Colors read stronger on a narrow frame than they do on a wide one, simply because the panel takes up more of the door. That is an argument for confidence with the wood tones and for a considered hand with the boldest colors.
