About modern hardware

What Makes Pulls and Knobs Modern

Modern pulls drop the curves and decoration of older hardware. Most are straight bars or flat rectangles with square or softly rounded ends, set on low posts so they sit close to the door. The goal is a line, not an ornament. That is why modern pulls look at home on flat slab doors, where nothing else on the face competes with the hardware.

This collection is mostly pulls, with a few knobs and a set of edge pulls for a handle-free look. Sizes run from short 3" pulls for vanities to long pulls near 19" for pantry doors. Brushed nickel, matte black and chrome lead the finishes, and you will also find bronze, satin brass, stainless steel and white. Every piece is from Richelieu and includes mounting screws.

Which modern hardware suits slab doors?

Slab doors have no frame, so the pull is the only detail on the face. Thin bar pulls and flat pulls keep that clean look, and edge pulls go one step further by moving the hardware to the top edge. On frameless cabinets, use the same pull length on doors and drawers of the same width so the rows line up. Tall doors and drawers over 30" wide take long pulls.

Can modern pulls go on shaker cabinets?

Yes, and it is a very common kitchen look today. A slim bar pull on a shaker door like Fabuwood Allure Galaxy Frost or Galaxy Cobblestone keeps the classic frame and adds a crisp, current edge. Center pulls on drawers. On doors, place them on the stile opposite the hinge, about 2" to 3" from the corner. For a softer mix of old and new, see transitional hardware.

Matte black or chrome for a modern kitchen?

Matte black gives the strongest contrast and reads as a crisp line on white and light gray cabinets. It pairs with black faucets and light fixtures. Chrome is bright and reflective, a cool match for stainless appliances and glossy white doors, though it shows fingerprints more. Warm gold is the newer option for navy and green cabinets like Galaxy Indigo or Galaxy Sage Green.

What size should modern pulls be?

Modern kitchens lean longer. 3-3/4" and 5" pulls are the most common modern sizes for standard drawers and doors, and many kitchens step up to 7-1/2" or more on wide drawers. The 1/3 rule keeps proportions right: a pull about one third the drawer width, so a 30" drawer can take a 10" pull. One pull length everywhere also works for a uniform look.

Modern Cabinet Pull FAQ

Are knobs or pulls more modern?

Pulls. A straight bar or flat pull matches the clean lines of a modern door better than a knob, and it is easier to grip on drawers. Simple, low-profile knobs still work on small doors and vanities, especially in matte black or brushed nickel.

Is brushed nickel still modern?

Yes, on the right shape. Brushed nickel on a slim bar pull looks current, while the same finish on an ornate pull reads older. It is also a practical modern finish, because it hides fingerprints and matches stainless appliances.

Should modern pulls go horizontal or vertical?

Drawers take pulls horizontally, centered on the front. Doors usually take pulls vertically on the stile opposite the hinge. Some modern kitchens set door pulls horizontally along the top or bottom of a slab door for a cleaner line.

How do I replace old pulls with modern ones?

Measure the center to center spacing of your current holes and choose a modern pull with the same spacing, so the new pull covers them. If you change sizes, plan to fill the old holes. Every pull includes screws for a standard 3/4" door or drawer front.
