• Fabuwood Quest Metro carries Mist, the most affordable gray shaker we stock.
• Jarlin carries Sandy Mirage and Sterling Gray, both stocked assembled and built and adjusted at the factory.

Three different construction stories sit behind those doors, and the difference between them is larger than the difference between the colors. Fabuwood Allure, covering Galaxy and Fusion, is framed on a plywood box with a solid wood face frame. Fabuwood Illume Tuscany is frameless, which means there is no face frame across the front of the cabinet, so the door covers the whole opening and you reach the full width of the box. Jarlin is framed on 1/2 inch plywood with a double-doweled hardwood face frame.

What You Get in Every Box

The hardware and drawer construction follow the line rather than the color, so here is what each one gives you.

• Fabuwood Allure uses solid wood drawer boxes with dovetail joints, an interlocking corner that keeps a loaded drawer square, running on Blum Tandem plus Blumotion runners with Blum Compact Clip soft-close hinges.
• Fabuwood Illume Tuscany is built on 3/4 inch engineered furniture board and uses the Blum MERIVOBOX metal drawer system rather than dovetail boxes. The metal side wall is slimmer, which is part of what gives the frameless box its full-access interior and generous usable width.
• Jarlin uses dovetail drawers with 5/8 inch solid wood sides on its 1/2 inch plywood box, with soft-close hinges and runners standard.

Across all three, full-extension runners bring the drawer completely clear of the cabinet so the back of it is genuinely reachable, and the soft-close mechanism takes the last inch quietly on its own. Frameless construction gives a wider opening and full access to the box, which is the practical reason to choose Tuscany over a framed cabinet.

Available Finishes

Nickel is the most-requested mid gray, cool and clean without tipping into blue. It is available on both Galaxy and Fusion and is the safest starting point if you are unsure which direction to go.

Stone, on Fusion, is warmer than Nickel and leans greige. It settles well in a room with wood floors and warm light.

Cashmere, from Illume Tuscany, is the palest option here, a soft light gray that reads almost off-white in a bright room. Basalto, from the same line, is the deepest, a rich charcoal gray that looks particularly handsome on an island or a run of tall cabinets.

Mist, from Quest Metro, is a light-to-mid gray and the most affordable gray shaker in the range.

From Jarlin, Sandy Mirage is a warm greige and Sterling Gray is a true mid gray.

Horizon is the most interesting of the group. It is a stained wood finish rather than a paint, available on Galaxy, so you get a grayed, weathered wood look with real grain showing through. A painted gray gives you a uniform, solid color that is easy to match to a specific quartz and keeps a kitchen calm. A grayed stain keeps the wood grain visible under the color, hides everyday wear well and gives the room a texture paint cannot produce. Because it is a stain over real wood, the tone shifts slightly between doors, which Fabuwood notes is normal for a stained finish. Putting the Kitchen Together

Gray carries undertones that only show up next to another material, so matching the undertone is the main job here.

A cool gray such as Nickel or Basalto pairs cleanly with white and gray quartz, stainless appliances and polished or brushed nickel hardware. Keep the counter on the cooler side and the whole room stays crisp.

A warm gray such as Stone or Sandy Mirage wants warmer company: cream and beige-veined quartz, wood floors, and brass or bronze hardware. Those pairings bring out the greige rather than fighting it.

A grayed wood tone like Horizon is the most flexible of the three, because the grain carries both warm and cool notes and bridges materials that would otherwise sit awkwardly together. It is the one to sample if your floor and countertop pull in different directions.

Soft-close is standard across all three lines. Lazy Susan, Easy Reach and Wall Pie Cut cabinets are supplied without the mechanism, which is worth knowing before you plan a corner.

Painted grays give the most predictable color match to a specific countertop and stay uniform across a large room. Stained finishes such as Horizon vary gently from door to door and wear in rather than showing their age, so the choice comes down to which quality you want more.

The same gray costs different amounts depending on the door it sits on, because Fabuwood assigns each door style to a price column and Galaxy sits one column below Fusion, Luna and Nexus. On a 30 inch double door base, Galaxy Nickel runs about $522 where Fusion Nickel is around $638: the same paint and the same box construction, roughly 18 percent apart. Below Allure, Quest Metro Mist is the budget option, with Jarlin between the two. All prices come from the current Fabuwood and Jarlin books.
