How to Choose Cabinet Knobs and Pulls
Cabinet hardware is the part of a kitchen you touch every day, so it pays to choose the size, finish and style together. The quick version: knobs on doors, pulls on drawers, one finish carried through the room, and pull lengths scaled to the drawer. The guide below covers each choice, and our design team is happy to count the pieces for your layout.
Cabinet Pull Sizes
Pulls are measured center to center, the distance between the two screw holes. If you are replacing hardware, measure the existing holes and match that size so no new holes are needed. For new cabinets, a common guide is a pull about one third of the drawer width.
| Center to center | Metric | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| 3" | 76 mm | Vanities, small drawers and the classic size on older cabinets |
| 3-3/4" | 96 mm | The most common modern size for doors and drawers up to 18" wide |
| 5" | 128 mm | Drawers 18" to 24" wide and a clean look on shaker doors |
| 6-1/4" | 160 mm | Drawers 24" to 30" wide |
| 7-1/2" | 192 mm | Wide drawers, 30" to 36" drawer bases and pots and pans drawers |
| 10" and longer | 256 mm+ | Tall pantry doors, oversized drawers and a bold modern statement |
Pulls or Knobs?
Knobs are the traditional choice for doors: one hole, easy to install, and a light look on upper cabinets. Pulls are easier to grab on drawers and heavy doors, which is why most kitchens use pulls on every drawer. A popular mix is knobs on the wall cabinets and pulls on the base cabinets and drawers, all in the same finish. For a modern kitchen, pulls on everything give a clean, consistent line.
Matching Hardware to Your Cabinet Color
Hardware reads best when it contrasts with the door. A few pairings we see work again and again:
- White and off-white shaker cabinets such as Fabuwood Allure Galaxy Frost and Galaxy Linen: black pulls for contrast, or champagne bronze and satin brass for warmth.
- Green and blue cabinets such as Galaxy Sage Green and Galaxy Denim Blue: gold and brass finishes are the favorite pairing.
- Gray and wood-tone cabinets such as Galaxy Nickel and Galaxy Natural Oak: black or brushed nickel.
- Traditional and farmhouse kitchens: oil-rubbed bronze and bow pulls on drawers.
Not sure yet? Order door samples of the cabinet finish you are considering and hold the hardware up to the door in your own light.
How Many Pulls and Knobs Does a Kitchen Need?
Count one piece for every door and every drawer front. Double doors take two, and drawers wider than about 30 inches often look best with two pulls or one long pull. A typical 10x10 kitchen uses 25 to 35 pieces. If you are ordering cabinets from us, send us your layout and we will count the hardware with your quote, or start a free 3D kitchen design.
Shipping and Ordering
Cabinet hardware ships by parcel directly from Richelieu, usually within 1 to 2 business days, and arrives separately from cabinet freight. Hardware orders over $49 ship free to the contiguous United States. Every pull and knob includes the mounting screws for a standard 3/4" door or drawer front. We recommend confirming your pull sizes and finishes before you order, since hardware sales are final, the same as our cabinets. Our team is happy to check sizes against your layout first.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size cabinet pulls are most popular?
3-3/4" (96 mm) and 5" (128 mm) are the most popular sizes for kitchen drawers and doors. Wide drawers usually step up to 6-1/4" or 7-1/2".
How do I measure cabinet pulls?
Measure center to center, from the middle of one screw hole to the middle of the other. That is the number shown on every pull in this collection.
Are screws included?
Yes. Every pull and knob in this collection comes with mounting screws sized for standard cabinet doors and drawer fronts.
Do you offer free shipping on cabinet hardware?
Yes. Hardware orders over $49 ship free to the contiguous United States, and smaller orders ship for a flat rate.
Should cabinet hardware match my faucet?
It does not have to. Many kitchens match the hardware to the faucet or lighting, and many mix two metals on purpose. The safest choice is one hardware finish across all the cabinets.
Where should knobs and pulls go on a cabinet?
On doors, place knobs or pulls on the stile opposite the hinge, about 2" to 3" from the corner. On drawers, center the pull on the drawer front.
