Classic Pulls and Knobs With Real Detail
Traditional hardware is where the decoration lives. Bow pulls rise in a gentle arch from the door, pull ends are shaped and detailed, and knobs often have a rounded or patterned top. These pieces echo the profiles of raised panel doors and crown molding, so the cabinets and hardware look like they were designed together. On a plain door they add character that a straight bar cannot.
The finishes lean warm and aged. Brushed oil-rubbed bronze, antique nickel, pewter and antique English lead the darker side, with burnished brass, antique copper and wrought iron for a more rustic kitchen. Brushed nickel, polished nickel and chrome keep a traditional design bright. Pulls run from 3" to 12-5/8", and the collection includes knobs for doors and vanities.
What hardware suits raised panel doors?
Raised panel doors have deep, layered profiles, so they can carry hardware with some weight and detail. Bow pulls and pulls with decorative ends match that formality, and a round knob with a detailed top looks right on the doors. Keep pulls modest in size, usually 3" to 5", since a long modern bar can look out of place against the shaped profile.
Which antique finish should you choose?
Oil-rubbed bronze is a deep brown with lighter highlights that show on the edges. Antique English is a dark, aged finish with warm undertones. Pewter and antique nickel are soft, muted grays that look like they have been in the house for years. Choose oil-rubbed bronze or antique English for warm wood and cream cabinets, and pewter or antique nickel for gray and white doors.
Traditional hardware on shaker and farmhouse cabinets
Traditional pulls also suit shaker doors. On Galaxy Linen or Galaxy Natural Oak, a bow pull in oil-rubbed bronze gives a classic farmhouse feel. On Galaxy Indigo, burnished brass or antique copper adds warmth against the navy. On Galaxy Nickel, pewter or antique nickel keeps the look calm. For the most classic layout, use knobs on doors and pulls on drawers.
Where do traditional knobs and pulls go?
Place knobs on the stile opposite the hinge, about 2" to 3" from the corner: near the bottom on wall cabinets and near the top on base cabinets. Center pulls on drawers, or use two pulls on drawers 30" and wider. On a very small drawer, a single centered knob is the traditional choice. Shop cabinet knobs and cabinet pulls.
Traditional Cabinet Hardware FAQ
What is a bow pull?
A bow pull has a curved handle shaped like a shallow arch that rises from two mounting points. It is the classic traditional cabinet pull. The curve gives your fingers plenty of room, which makes it comfortable on heavy drawers.
Is oil-rubbed bronze outdated?
No. Oil-rubbed bronze is still a strong choice for traditional and farmhouse kitchens, especially with cream, wood and green cabinets like Galaxy Sage Green. It pairs well with bronze faucets and warm lighting. For a brighter warm metal, compare brass and gold.
Can traditional hardware go in a modern kitchen?
Yes, in small doses. A traditional bow pull in matte black or brushed nickel looks fresh on a simple shaker door. Keep that finish on every door and drawer so it reads as a deliberate choice. For more balance between the two, see transitional hardware.
