How to Choose Kitchen Cabinet Pulls
Pulls are the workhorse of cabinet hardware. A pull gives you a full hand grip, so a heavy drawer of pots and pans opens easily, and it is easier to use than a knob for anyone with weaker hands. In a kitchen with lots of drawers, the pulls also set the look: long bars feel modern and curved shapes feel traditional.
This collection brings together every pull we carry. Brushed nickel, oil-rubbed bronze and matte black have the widest choice, with chrome, champagne bronze and satin brass for brighter or warmer looks. Modern bar pulls make up a large share, alongside transitional and traditional designs for classic doors and edge pulls that mount on the top of a drawer. Sizes run from 3" to 19-1/8", so you can match old holes or start fresh.
What size cabinet pulls should I use?
Choose a pull about one third the width of the drawer. A 12" drawer takes a 3-3/4" pull, a 15" drawer a 5" pull, an 18" drawer a 6-1/4" pull and a 21" to 24" drawer a 7-1/2" pull. For 30" and 36" drawers, choose a 10" or 12-5/8" pull from our long pulls, or use two shorter pulls. Many kitchens use one size on every drawer for a consistent look, most often 3-3/4" or 5".
Should you use pulls or knobs?
Pulls are the better choice for drawers, tall pantry doors and anything heavy, because you can grab them with your whole hand. Knobs are compact and work well on doors and small drawers. The most common plan uses knobs on doors and pulls on drawers in the same finish. An all-pull kitchen suits modern designs and is easier for kids and older family members to use.
Bar pulls, edge pulls or traditional pulls?
Bar pulls are straight rods on two posts, the go-to shape for shaker and slab doors. Edge pulls mount to the top edge of a drawer or door and almost disappear, which suits flat panel and handleless looks. Traditional pulls have curved or decorative profiles for raised panel and farmhouse kitchens. Keep one shape and finish across the kitchen.
Where should cabinet pulls go?
On drawers, center the pull side to side. On a shaker drawer it can sit on the panel or a little higher. On doors, mount the pull vertically on the stile opposite the hinge, about 2" to 3" from the corner, at the top of base doors and the bottom of wall doors. Planning a new kitchen? Cabinet Pulls FAQ
How are cabinet pulls measured?
By center to center distance, from the middle of one screw hole to the middle of the other, not by overall length. Common sizes are 3" (76 mm), 3-3/4" (96 mm), 5" (128 mm), 6-1/4" (160 mm), 7-1/2" (192 mm) and 10" (256 mm).
How do I replace pulls without drilling new holes?
Unscrew one existing pull, measure the distance between the hole centers, and order that same size. Many older kitchens use 3" or 3-3/4" pulls. Moving to a longer pull means drilling new holes, and the old ones may show unless the new pull covers them.
What is the most common size for kitchen cabinet pulls?
3-3/4" (96 mm) and 5" (128 mm) are the most common modern sizes. They fit standard base drawers and look right mounted vertically on most doors. Use longer pulls on drawers wider than about 18".
Do cabinet pulls include screws?
Yes. Every pull comes with mounting screws for a standard 3/4" door or drawer front. Thicker fronts may need longer screws. Pulls ship by parcel directly from Richelieu, and hardware orders over $49 ship free to the contiguous United States.
