About 5" pulls

Sizing and Styling 5 Inch (128 mm) Pulls

A 5" pull sits in the middle of the size range, which makes it the most versatile length for a full kitchen. It is long enough to look intentional on 15" to 21" drawers and short enough to mount vertically on a standard wall cabinet door. That balance lets one size do the work of two, so ordering is simple and every front in the room lines up.

The metric figure explains the odd number. 128 mm is four steps of the 32 mm system used for cabinet hardware, and it converts to 5.04", so it is sold as 5". This size comes in a wide range of designs, from slim modern bars and softly curved transitional pulls to traditional arches and edge pulls that mount along the edge of a drawer front.

One size for the whole kitchen

Using 5" on every door and drawer is the cleanest modern layout. On drawers, center the pull on the front. On doors, mount it vertically on the stile opposite the hinge, 2" to 3" from the corner: near the bottom on wall cabinets and near the top on base cabinets. Only the widest drawers, 30" and up, usually call for a longer pull such as 10".

5" or 3-3/4"?

Measure your drawers first. If most are 15" or wider, 5" will look better proportioned than 3-3/4". On shaker doors with narrow stiles, 5" still fits easily because the screws run along the length of the stile. Choose 3-3/4" when the room is mostly small doors, as in many bathrooms and laundry rooms, or when your existing holes are already 96 mm apart.

Edge pulls and slim bars at 5"

Five inches is a comfortable length for an edge pull. Mounted along the edge of a drawer or door, it nearly disappears and lets the cabinet color take the lead. This works well on bold Fabuwood colors such as Galaxy Indigo or Galaxy Denim Blue, where the paint is the feature. A thin bar pull in matte black or brushed nickel gives a similar quiet look on the face of the door.

Matching 5" holes when you replace hardware

Measure from the center of one screw hole to the center of the other. A reading of 5" or 128 mm means any pull here will fit, since 127 mm and 128 mm are close enough to share holes. Readings of 4" (102 mm) or 6" (152 mm) are separate sizes that will not line up with 128 mm, so confirm the number before you order a full kitchen.

Common Questions About 5 Inch Pulls

What size drawer is a 5 inch pull for?

By the 1/3 rule, a 5" pull fits a drawer about 15" wide, and it looks good from about 12" to 21". On 24" drawers, 7-1/2" is the closer match, and on 30" drawers a 10" pull is.

How long is a 5" pull from end to end?

Most measure about 5-1/2" to 6" overall, since the ends extend past the screws. Arched and decorative designs can run a bit longer. Each product lists its overall length, so you can check clearance before ordering.

Can I use 5" pulls on cabinet doors?

Yes. Mounted vertically, a 5" pull fits standard wall and base cabinet doors. It gives doors a stronger, more modern line than a knob, and it matches the drawer pulls when you use one size throughout.

Do 5" pulls work in a bathroom?

Yes, on vanity drawers 15" wide or more. Pick a finish close to the faucet. Brushed nickel and chrome are the easiest matches, and matte black pairs well with a black faucet or black light fixtures.
