Are Lowe's Cabinets Good Quality? What You Actually Get

|By , Founder
L-shaped kitchen with white shaker cabinets, a farmhouse sink and open wood shelving

Lowe's sells cabinets in three tiers and the names are confusingly similar. Diamond NOW is the in-stock line, and its Arcadia range is white laminate rather than painted wood. Diamond Express sits above it with painted plywood. Diamond is the semi-custom line. All three are MasterBrand, and the difference between them is far bigger than the shared name suggests. Direct Cabinet Deals is an authorized online dealer for Fabuwood, Jarlin, Kitchen Cabinet Distributors (KCD), CNC Cabinetry and Eurocraft. We sell cabinets and do not install them, and we do not sell any Lowe's brand. Every figure below was read off lowes.com on 2026-09-23 at the S. Tampa, FL 33611 store.

Quick Answer: Are Lowe's Cabinets Good Quality?

The stock line is fair, and priced higher than you would expect. Diamond NOW Arcadia rates 3.9 stars across 9,148 reviews, and a representative ten cabinet kitchen came to about $2,548.00. That is more than the equivalent Home Depot budget kitchen, for a laminate box rather than a wood one. Step up to Diamond Express or Diamond and the construction improves substantially, and so does the price. The gap that matters: for about $268.49 more than the Arcadia kitchen you can have Jarlin with a plywood box throughout.

Diamond NOW, Diamond Express and Diamond

Almost every comparison article online treats these as one brand. They are not:

  • Diamond NOW is in-stock at Lowe's. Arcadia, its best known range, is laminate over engineered board.
  • Diamond Express is the middle tier. The Jamestown range is listed as white painted plywood.
  • Diamond is semi-custom, ordered rather than stocked, with many more door styles, finishes and sizes.

If you read "Diamond cabinets are plywood" or "Diamond cabinets are garbage" without a line named, the claim is not useful. Our Diamond NOW review goes deeper on the stock line, which is what most shoppers are actually looking at.

Quality and Construction: What to Look At

Every cabinet argument comes down to four things. Below is the same cabinet, a 30 inch double door base, from two cabinets we actually stock, so you can see what each tier looks like instead of taking our word for it.

Jarlin Dove White Shaker base cabinet with a plywood box and soft-close hardware

Value tier

Shown: Jarlin Dove White Shaker B30 Base Cabinet Double Door/Single Drawer 30"W x 34.5"H x 24"D
  • Plywood box, not particleboard
  • Solid wood door frame
  • Soft-close hinges and slides
  • Ships assembled or ready to assemble
  • Fewer finishes and door styles
Fabuwood Allure Galaxy Frost base cabinet with a plywood box and dovetail drawers

Upper tier

Shown: Fabuwood Allure Galaxy Frost 30" W X 34 1/2" H X 24" D Double Door Base Cabinet
  • Plywood box throughout
  • Solid wood doors and drawer fronts
  • Dovetail drawer boxes
  • Undermount soft-close slides
  • Limited lifetime warranty

Box material. Plywood holds screws better, carries more weight, and survives a slow leak under the sink. Particleboard and laminate-wrapped board swell once water reaches the core and never recover.

Drawer boxes. Dovetail joints interlock and stay square. Stapled or doweled boxes loosen with daily use, and once a drawer racks it will not sit right again.

Hardware. Undermount soft-close slides and concealed soft-close hinges should be included, not an upgrade line.

Finish. Look at the edges and inside corners. That is where a thin finish goes first.

Laminate deserves a specific note, because it is what the Diamond NOW stock line is made of. It is a printed surface bonded to engineered board. It looks uniform when new and wipes clean, but it cannot be sanded, touched up or refinished. A chip is permanent.

Diamond NOW vs Fabuwood: the Same Cabinet, Side by Side

Both of these are the same cabinet: a 24 inch wide double door base. On the left is the Lowe's stock tier. On the right is what we would put in that spot.

What a Full Kitchen Costs

A standard 10x10 kitchen is the only honest unit. Here is the representative Arcadia layout we priced, against ours live from the site:

10x10 kitchen Box List Price
Diamond NOW Arcadia Laminate over engineered board   $2,548.00
Jarlin Dove White Shaker Plywood $3,729.20 $2,816.49
Fabuwood Allure Galaxy Frost Plywood, dovetail drawers $6,365.00 $3,819.00

Lowe's shows "Bulk Savings Available" on the Arcadia cabinets without publishing a percentage, so we have not applied a discount we cannot verify. Ask in store, and price your exact list.

About $268.49 separates the Arcadia kitchen from a plywood Jarlin kitchen. That is one of the smallest gaps in cabinetry for one of the largest jumps in material, and it is the single most useful number on this page.

The closest upgrade

Want the plywood box without the big jump?

Jarlin gets you a plywood box, solid wood door frames and soft-close hardware throughout for about $268.49 more than a big-box stock kitchen. Assembled or ready to assemble, shipped to your door.

The Real Tradeoff

Buying at Lowe's gets you two things worth paying for: you can see and touch the cabinet, and the stocked sizes are available immediately. Factory-direct gets you a better box for similar money, a far wider range of doors and finishes, and a designer working on your actual layout. Neither is wrong, but they are different purchases, and the price difference is smaller than most people assume. Our factory-direct vs big-box breakdown covers it in full.

So Which Should You Buy?

Buy Diamond NOW if you need assembled cabinets quickly, the kitchen is a rental or a flip, and laminate is acceptable for how long you plan to keep it.

Step up to Diamond Express or Diamond if you want to stay with Lowe's and want plywood or a wider selection. Expect the price to move accordingly.

Buy Jarlin if you want plywood and solid wood door frames for close to the stock price.

Buy Fabuwood if this is your own kitchen and you intend to keep it. Plywood boxes, dovetail drawers, the widest selection of doors and finishes, cabinet modifications and a limited lifetime warranty.

Lowe's Cabinet FAQs

Are Lowe's cabinets good quality?

The stock Diamond NOW line is fair: it rates 3.9 stars across 9,148 reviews, and the Arcadia range is laminate over engineered board rather than wood. Diamond Express and the semi-custom Diamond line are built better and priced higher. Judge the line, not the store.

Who makes Lowe's cabinets?

MasterBrand makes the Diamond NOW, Diamond Express and Diamond lines sold at Lowe's. The same parent company makes Thomasville, which is sold at Home Depot.

How much is a Lowe's 10x10 kitchen?

A representative ten cabinet layout in Diamond NOW Arcadia White Laminate came to $2,548.00 when we priced it on 2026-09-23 at the S. Tampa, FL 33611 store. Lowe's advertises bulk savings without publishing a percentage. Local prices vary and your cabinet list will differ.

Who has better cabinets, Lowe's or Home Depot?

They are closely matched, and the honest answer is that it depends on the specific cabinet. Home Depot's Hampton Bay is particleboard on much of its assembled range, and Lowe's Diamond NOW Arcadia is laminate. Home Depot's Thomasville is plywood. See our Home Depot review.

What is a good alternative to Lowe's cabinets?

For close to the same money, Jarlin gets you a plywood box and solid wood door frames instead of laminate. For the best build, Fabuwood adds a much wider finish range, cabinet modifications and a limited lifetime warranty.

Does Direct Cabinet Deals sell Lowe's brands?

No. We are an authorized dealer for Fabuwood, Jarlin, Kitchen Cabinet Distributors (KCD), CNC Cabinetry and Eurocraft. The Diamond NOW figures here come from Lowe's own listings and customer ratings.
