"Are Home Depot cabinets good?" has no single answer, because Home Depot sells two very different cabinets under one roof. Hampton Bay, the in-house budget brand, is largely particleboard and rates between 3.7 and 4.1 stars depending on which cabinet you pick. Thomasville, a tier up, is assembled plywood and costs about three times as much per cabinet. Direct Cabinet Deals is an authorized online dealer for Fabuwood, Jarlin, Kitchen Cabinet Distributors (KCD), CNC Cabinetry and Eurocraft. We sell cabinets and do not install them, and we do not sell Hampton Bay or Thomasville. Every figure below was read off homedepot.com on 2026-09-23 at the Royal Palm Beach, FL 33414 store.
Quick Answer: Are Home Depot Cabinets Good?
Home Depot cabinets are good at exactly what they are built for. If you need cabinets today for a rental, a flip or a laundry room, Hampton Bay is stocked, cheap and in the truck this afternoon. If you want plywood and you are buying in person, Thomasville is a genuinely well built cabinet. What Home Depot is not is the best value on either count. A representative Hampton Bay 10x10 came to $2,090.70 after their ten-cabinet discount, and a single 36 inch Thomasville plywood base was $788.92, where our entire ten cabinet Fabuwood plywood kitchen is $3,819.00.
What Home Depot Actually Sells
| Brand | Box | Rating | Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hampton Bay | Particleboard on much of the assembled range, plywood on Avondale RTA | 3.7 to 4.1 by cabinet | In-house budget brand, stocked |
| Thomasville | Plywood on QuickShip Cottage | Not published on these listings | Step up, ordered |
| Home Decorators Collection | Varies, some all-plywood | Varies | Mid range |
The practical consequence: the brand name on the door tells you almost nothing. Open the spec tab on the individual listing and read the box material, the drawer joinery and the hinge type. Within Hampton Bay alone, the Avondale ready-to-assemble line uses plywood while much of the assembled range does not.
Quality and Construction: What to Look At
Every cabinet argument comes down to four things. Below is the same cabinet, a 30 inch double door base, from two cabinets we actually stock, so you can see what each tier looks like instead of taking our word for it.
Value tier
Shown: Jarlin Dove White Shaker B30 Base Cabinet Double Door/Single Drawer 30"W x 34.5"H x 24"D- Plywood box, not particleboard
- Solid wood door frame
- Soft-close hinges and slides
- Ships assembled or ready to assemble
- Fewer finishes and door styles
Upper tier
Shown: Fabuwood Allure Galaxy Frost 30" W X 34 1/2" H X 24" D Double Door Base Cabinet- Plywood box throughout
- Solid wood doors and drawer fronts
- Dovetail drawer boxes
- Undermount soft-close slides
- Limited lifetime warranty
Box material. Plywood holds screws better, carries more weight, and survives a slow leak under the sink. Particleboard and laminate-wrapped board swell once water reaches the core and never recover.
Drawer boxes. Dovetail joints interlock and stay square. Stapled or doweled boxes loosen with daily use, and once a drawer racks it will not sit right again.
Hardware. Undermount soft-close slides and concealed soft-close hinges should be included, not an upgrade line.
Finish. Look at the edges and inside corners. That is where a thin finish goes first.
The Ratings Tell You Where the Weak Point Is
Home Depot's own customer ratings on the Hampton Bay Satin White line are the most useful data on the whole site, because they are tied to verified purchases and the pattern is consistent:
- Plain wall cabinets rate highest, 4.0 to 4.1 stars
- Plain base cabinets sit at 3.8
- Three-drawer bases and the diagonal corner wall are lowest, both 3.7
Cabinets with drawers and moving parts rate lowest, and boxes with nothing to go wrong rate highest. That is not a criticism we invented. It is their own data, and it points straight at drawer construction and hardware, which is exactly where a cheaper cabinet saves money.
What a Full Kitchen Costs
A standard 10x10 kitchen is the only honest unit of comparison. Here is the representative Hampton Bay layout we priced, against ours live from the site:
| 10x10 kitchen | Box | List | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hampton Bay Satin White | Particleboard on much of the line | $2,323.00 | $2,090.70 after their 10 cabinet discount |
| Jarlin Dove White Shaker | Plywood | $3,729.20 | $2,816.49 |
| Fabuwood Allure Galaxy Frost | Plywood, dovetail drawers | $6,365.00 | $3,819.00 |
About $725.79 separates a Hampton Bay kitchen from a Jarlin kitchen, and that difference buys a plywood box and soft-close hardware throughout. Going the other way, a single Thomasville plywood base at $788.92 means four or five cabinets cost what our whole Fabuwood kitchen costs.
Want the plywood box without the big jump?
Jarlin gets you a plywood box, solid wood door frames and soft-close hardware throughout for about $725.79 more than a big-box stock kitchen. Assembled or ready to assemble, shipped to your door.
Shop Jarlin Cabinets See the 10x10 PriceThe Real Tradeoff
Big-box cabinets buy you two things worth paying for: you can touch them before you buy, and you can have the stocked sizes immediately. Factory-direct buys you a better box at the same money, a far wider range of doors and finishes, and a designer who works on your layout. Neither is wrong. They are different purchases.
What we would push back on is the assumption that big-box is automatically cheaper. On the numbers above it is not, once you hold box material constant. Read our factory-direct vs big-box breakdown for the full comparison.
So Which Should You Buy?
Buy Hampton Bay if the kitchen is a rental or a flip and the budget is fixed. It does that job and nobody should talk you out of it.
Buy Thomasville if you want plywood and you want to buy in store.
Buy Jarlin if you want a plywood box near the Hampton Bay price.
Buy Fabuwood if this is your own kitchen and you intend to keep it. Plywood boxes, dovetail drawers, the widest selection of doors and finishes, cabinet modifications and a limited lifetime warranty.

Are Home Depot cabinets good quality?
It depends entirely on which brand. Hampton Bay, the in-house budget line, is largely particleboard and rates 3.7 to 4.1 stars by cabinet type. Thomasville QuickShip is assembled plywood and much better built. The brand on the door matters far more than the store.
What brands of cabinets does Home Depot sell?
Hampton Bay is the in-house brand. Thomasville and Home Decorators Collection sit above it, and custom programs are available through their design service. Hampton Bay and Thomasville are the two most people are choosing between.
How much is a Home Depot 10x10 kitchen?
A representative ten cabinet Hampton Bay layout in Satin White came to $2,323.00, or about $2,090.70 after their posted ten-cabinet discount, when we priced it on 2026-09-23 at the Royal Palm Beach, FL 33414 store. Thomasville costs several times more per cabinet. Local prices vary.
Who has better cabinets, Home Depot or Lowe's?
They are closely matched, because both sell a budget stock line and a step-up line from the same few manufacturers. Home Depot's Hampton Bay is particleboard on much of its assembled range, and Lowe's Diamond NOW Arcadia is laminate over engineered board. Compare the specific cabinet, not the store. See our Lowe's review.
Are Home Depot cabinets worth it?
For a rental, a flip, or any kitchen you need immediately, yes. For a kitchen you intend to keep, factory-direct gets you a plywood box for similar money. About $725.79 separates the Hampton Bay 10x10 we priced from a plywood Jarlin kitchen.
Does Direct Cabinet Deals sell Home Depot brands?
No. We are an authorized dealer for Fabuwood, Jarlin, Kitchen Cabinet Distributors (KCD), CNC Cabinetry and Eurocraft. The Hampton Bay and Thomasville figures here come from Home Depot's own listings and customer ratings.
