Valencia Bathroom Vanities

Valencia is Fabuwood's furniture vanity line: a small range of freestanding bathroom vanities built the way a piece of furniture is built, with inset doors, solid wood face frames and turned square feet instead of a toe kick. There is one door style and three painted finishes, which makes choosing straightforward, and the whole line is covered by Fabuwood's Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Why a Furniture Vanity Looks Different

Most bathroom vanities are a base cabinet with a toe kick, which is the recessed strip along the floor that lets you stand close to the counter. It is practical and it disappears. A furniture vanity does the opposite: it stands on legs, so you see the floor continue underneath it and the piece reads as something placed in the room rather than built into it.

Valencia uses 2-1/4 inch square wood feet with adjustable levelers hidden inside them, so the vanity sits level on an uneven bathroom floor without anything visible propping it up. On the 48 inch and 60 inch sizes there is an additional center foot, because a wide cabinet carrying a stone top needs support in the middle as well as the corners.

The effect suits a bathroom where you want one considered piece rather than a fitted run. It works particularly well in a powder room, where the vanity is most of what anyone sees.

Inset Doors, and What That Means

On most cabinets the door sits on top of the frame and covers it. That is called overlay. Valencia is framed inset: the door sits inside the frame opening, flush with the face of the cabinet, so you see a thin even line of wood around every door and drawer.

Inset is the more demanding way to build a cabinet, because the gap around each door has to be consistent for the piece to look right. It is also the reason inset cabinetry reads as more expensive. The doors are hung on Blum Compact Clip concealed hinges that are adjustable in six directions, which is what lets an installer bring those gaps into line once the vanity is in place.

The doors themselves are five piece: solid wood stiles and rails joined with mortise and tenon joints around a 3/8 inch recessed center panel. Mortise and tenon is a wood joint where a tongue on one piece seats into a slot in the other, which is stronger than a glued butt joint and is the traditional way a cabinet door is made. The center panel is MDF rather than solid wood on purpose, because MDF does not expand and contract with the seasons, so a painted panel is far less likely to crack at the joint.

What Is Inside the Cabinet

The construction is the same across all four sizes:

• Solid wood face frame with 2-1/4 inch posts interlocked with a 1-1/2 inch by 3/4 inch frame, assembled with Threespine click joinery.
• Half inch veneered plywood sides, bottoms and backs, with the interior and the exterior both finished to match the door. Open a Valencia vanity and the inside is the same color as the outside.
• Dovetail drawer boxes in 5/8 inch solid wood with a 3/8 inch plywood bottom. Dovetail means the sides interlock rather than being stapled, which keeps a drawer square after years of use.
• Blum Tandem full extension runners with soft close, so the drawer travels its whole length and you can reach the back of it.
• A 17-1/2 inch deep adjustable shelf in every sink base, with a U shaped cutout so it fits around the plumbing rather than stopping short of it. It is finished to match the doors.
• Removable dividers in the bottom drawer, and rubber bumpers on every door and drawer front.

That shelf detail is worth dwelling on. The space under a bathroom sink is usually wasted because the trap runs straight through the middle of it. A shelf cut around the plumbing turns it into real storage.

The Three Finishes

Valencia comes in one door style, Lavari, in three painted finishes.

• Frost is a clean white. It is the most flexible of the three and the one that suits a small bathroom, because it keeps the room feeling open and lets the mirror, lighting and hardware carry the character.
• Indigo is a deep blue. Against white walls and warm metal hardware it gives a bathroom the feel of a considered piece of furniture rather than a fitting.
• Nickel is a soft mid grey that sits between the two, working with both warm and cool tiles.

Sizes and Configurations

Four sizes, all 33 inches high and 21 inches deep:

• VSLD30, 30 inches wide. Double doors and one wide drawer, single sink.
• VSLD36, 36 inches wide. Same layout with more counter either side of the bowl.
• VSLD48, 48 inches wide. Same layout, with the extra center foot.
• VSLD60 Double, 60 inches wide. Two sets of double doors, two wide drawers with removable dividers, and three middle drawers. The bottom one is extra deep at 9 inches of interior height, behind two attached drawer fronts, so it takes tall bottles standing up.

At 33 inches high these sit taller than an older 30 inch vanity, which most adults find more comfortable to use. Worth checking against your mirror height before ordering if you are replacing rather than starting fresh.

Pairing It With a Top

Valencia ships as a cabinet, so the top is a separate choice. The prefabricated tops we stock are sized to match: a VT30 for the 30 inch vanity, VT36 for the 36, VT48 for the 48 and VT60 for the 60, with the double bowl version for the double vanity. Each arrives with the counter, a 4 inch backsplash and the sink already together, so there is no fabrication step.

Good to Know

• Every size and finish is priced above. All three finishes cost the same, so choosing a color is a design decision rather than a budget one.
• The top is bought separately. The vanity is the cabinet only. Add the matching top from the grid above so both arrive together.
• Inset needs a careful install. The even gaps around the doors are the whole look, so the vanity wants to go in level. The six way hinges give your installer the adjustment to get there.
